Thanks so much to Oak Hill School students and faculty for a wonderful overnight field trip last week. This 4th grade class celebrated their year by learning along trails and creeks, on the zipline and high ropes course, and at the archery range. It was a delightful two spring days of learning and play with these students!

We’re looking back and celebrating our time with 7th grade students on their field trip to Cedar Crest earlier this month. Over the course of 3 days and 2 nights, they moved across trails to investigate the relationships embedded in a watershed, in forest ecosystems, in our decision making and work towards justice, and with each other on our high ropes course. It was special to learn, eat, and play alongside these students.

As April nears, we are so excited to welcome our upcoming EE groups and continue learning with students across landscapes here at Cedar Crest!

Welcoming spring this morning by exploring leaf packs in the creek. Leaf packs are clumps of leaves that can accumulate behind rocks, sticks, or branches in a creek or river. They can be a perfect place to look for macroinvertebrates. This morning included a caddisfly larva encased in twigs, a juicy crane fly larva, and possibly some signs of a netspinner caddisfly larva.

Leaf packs can be subject to storms and changing flows, so making your own packs can be a way to offer insight into who is living in your waterway and perhaps tell you a bit about its health. These leaf packs were made with jute erosion mat and twine and then submerged. In a month’s time we’ll peek and see who has been calling these leaf packs their home (and restaurant).

With the spring equinox’s connections to themes of renewal and growth, we’re celebrating the decomposers and detritivores in our ecosystems. Decomposition and new growth are always in active relationship.

The lake is has had some active builders on the scene for some time now. These images are from last month, and the dams are still holding strong after the ice storm and rains since then.

Beaver dams can be helpful reminders that land and water decision making does not rest solely with human beings. We are not the only ones making choices. All the more reason to lean in and be curious. We could ask “Should we…” questions before making our own decisions around land and water to better explore possibilities and think about what it means to hold on to uncertainty even as we reflect and act in the world.

Good morning to the winter season. The movement of a creek can lure you in when you consider how to savor the daylight we have on this solstice.

Questions bubble up: What’s alive just under the surface and under the rocks during this season? Did any edges of the rock bottom smooth ever so slightly this past year with the currents passing over? What organisms visit these different parts of the creek? At what time might a flock of birds bathe or raccoon wash its hands? What drew me to the creek this morning? How might I build on my relationship with this place in this season and the coming new year?

The cooler mornings as we approach fall are ideal for a nature hike. Taking in the sights, sounds, and smells around you is grounding, the perfect start to the day. The birds chirping, insects humming, and leaves crunching beneath my feet were the backdrop to my walk this morning.

Find time to take a nature walk of your own this week and see what you can discover.

A peek at summer EE this week on the eve of the summer solstice (we see you summer heat, we see you).

We’re sharing in trail and garden explorations while practicing with tools like journals, hand lenses, and compasses.
