International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons Present new, innovative and, often unpublished material and techniques or modifications in the field of Perio Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. P.D.

Over 30 years ago, Dr. Peter Nordland reached out to Dr. Preston Miller and suggested they meet to discuss similarities in root coverage surgery which up to that time had been considered impossible or at best unpredictable. They met during the American Academy of Periodontology’s Annual Meeting and shared differences and similarities in the procedures they were performing. Miller introduced Dr. Pa

t Allen to Dr. Nordland and they all decided to meet and share ideas about root coverage grafting. The meeting was so productive that they felt it would be a good idea to create a study group focused on regenerative surgery. They then invited some of the most talented and inquisitive clinicians of the time to also contribute. Little did they realize that the pendulum of periodontal surgical procedures was about to take a big swing into the regenerative and reconstructive direction. The interest and focus of the organization expanded as international surgeons and educators expressed an interest in participating. Over time, what had been known as the periodontal plastic surgery study club evolved into the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (ISPPS), and invitations to attend the annual meeting were offered to surgeon-educators interested in oral plastic surgery. Today, the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons is composed of dental specialists throughout the world, most of whom are full-time clinicians and educators. The society meets annually the day before the AAP annual meeting to present new, innovative and, often unpublished material and techniques or modifications to existing techniques in the field of periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery, aimed at improving overall esthetics to the benefit of patients long-term.

Explore the Narrative Review by Tavelli et al. (2026) published in the Journal of Periodontal Research! 🦷✨

This comprehensive review explores the current evidence on soft tissue substitutes for periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery, comparing xenogeneic and allogeneic biomaterials with autogenous grafts and providing practical guidance for clinical decision-making.

Key takeaways:• 🏆 Connective tissue grafts (CTGs) remain the gold standard for soft tissue augmentation, offering the most predictable gains in root coverage and tissue thickness. • 🔬 Soft tissue substitutes such as acellular dermal matrices and collagen matrices reduce surgical morbidity, eliminate the need for a donor site, and are often preferred by patients. • 📈 Graft substitutes can achieve substantial improvements in root coverage and soft tissue volume, especially in sites with favorable anatomy, although outcomes are generally less predictable than CTGs in complex esthetic cases. • 🤝 Treatment planning should balance clinical effectiveness with patient-centered outcomes, considering factors such as keratinized tissue, soft tissue phenotype, esthetic demands, and patient preferences.

As minimally invasive and patient-centered approaches continue to evolve, soft tissue substitutes are becoming valuable alternatives or adjuncts to autogenous grafts, helping clinicians tailor treatment strategies for both teeth and implant sites. 🌱🦷

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we share the passing of our founder, mentor, and visionary, Dr. P.D. Miller.

To the dental world, Dr. Miller was a titan: a master clinician, past President of the AAP, and the pioneer who literally coined the term "periodontal plastic surgery." But to the ISPPS family, he was the spark that brought us all together.

Over thirty years ago, Dr. Miller looked at a fragmented landscape and saw an opportunity. He brought together a small group of 20 forward-thinking clinicians, believing that clinical excellence demanded a culture of open, collaborative mentorship. Today, our global society of hundreds of members stands as a direct reflection of the ecosystem he built.

As Dr. Edward Pat Allen beautifully noted, “I give all the credit to Dr. P. D. Miller, whose vision created and guided this organization for many years.”

Dr. Miller believed our true task was not simply to replace what is lost, but to protect and preserve what can still be saved. While our profession has lost one of its truest giants, the framework he left behind ensures his philosophy will influence generations of periodontists to come.

🕊️ Honoring His Life & Legacy
For those who wish to pay their respects, a memorial service will be held this week:

Thursday, June 18, 2026

To our global community unable to attend in person, we know you will be there with us in spirit.

In tribute to our founder, we are formally dedicating our upcoming annual session to the legacy of Dr. P.D. Miller. We will honor him by continuing to champion the rigorous science, ethical innovation, and fierce camaraderie he instilled in us from day one.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his close friends, and the global community of surgeons he inspired. Rest in peace, Dr. Miller. We will continue to make your vision proud. 🤍

Mentorship is part of our DNA.

At the ISPPS, some of the most valuable learning happens not only at the podium, but in moments like this: gathered around the table, sharing techniques, asking questions, and learning directly from colleagues who have spent years refining their craft.

These shared experiences help shape the next generation of clinicians, creating a global community committed to ethical innovation, clinical excellence, and better outcomes for patients everywhere.

Because when knowledge is shared, everyone advances.

If mentorship, collaboration, and continuous learning matter to you, you belong in this conversation.

The most frustrating part of soft tissue grafting is unpredictability.

This October in Seattle, Dr. Makoto Ono and Dr. Shogo Maekawa are stepping up to the podium to demystify one of the most technically demanding scenarios in periodontal plastic surgery: managing wildly uneven, multiple recession defects in a single arch.

Depth Harmonization in Multiple Uneven Gingival Recessions:
A Tunnel Technique Incorporating Strategic Access Incisions and a Shifting-Suture Protocol

Forget abstract theory. In a hard-hitting, 20-minute masterclass, they are delivering a blueprint for predictable, balanced root coverage.

Instead of fighting tissue tension, you'll learn how their innovative tunnel modifications completely change the game. Drs. Ono and Maekawa will break down the exact mechanics of using strategic access incisions to maintain crucial vascularity, paired with a shifting-suture protocol designed to align mismatched tissue heights flawlessly.

Through high-resolution case studies and streamlined clinical data, they will map out:
* Architectural Control
* Vascular Preservation
* Suture Dynamics
* Aesthetic Predictability

This is a Monday-morning upgrade to your surgical toolkit. You'll walk away with highly reproducible, tactile strategies for your next complex grafting case.

The difference between a "good" surgical result and a flawless, long-term outcome comes down to millimeters and the exact thinking behind them.

If you’re ready to move past standard entry-level concepts and dial in true clinical mastery, you need to be in Seattle on October 28, 2026.

The International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (ISPPS) is hosting its 38th Annual Session, and we’re bringing out our co-founder for a rare, elite masterclass. Dr. Edward Pat Allen is taking the stage to break down The PALAT Technique.

This is high-level, technique-driven surgery meant to completely reshape your clinical judgment and predictability.

A Quick Clinical Spotlight from Dr. Allen - To give you an idea of the microscopic precision we'll be diving into, check out this recent breakdown from Dr. Allen on a common everyday challenge: "Papilla Access and Lateral closure is even appropriate for shallow lower anterior recession that we see every day in our practices.

Two 7-0 polypropylene interrupted sutures for the lateral closure, followed by a 6-0 polypropylene continuous sling suture.

Complete root coverage with a normal vestibule at one year post op..."

One Day. Zero Fluff.

Dr. Allen’s session is built strictly for clinicians looking to elevate their everyday outcomes from standard to exceptional.

Fair Warning: We keep this environment intentionally tight and elite. Because of that, seats are strictly limited, and this event has completely sold out for the past three years running.

REPOST (IG)
Do peri-implant phenotypic features influence long-term implant therapy outcomes?

In this 5-year longitudinal cohort study on tissue-level implants, we explored how peri-implant soft- and hard-tissue characteristics relate to long-term clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic, and patient-reported outcomes.

Overall, tissue-level implants showed excellent 5-year survival and high patient satisfaction. Several phenotype-related factors — including supracrestal tissue height, mucosal thickness, buccal bone thickness, keratinized mucosa width, and restorative emergence angle — were associated with peri-implant health and stability over time.

These findings highlight the importance of phenotype-driven implant planning and long-term monitoring.

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE SPOTLIGHT

Showcasing the incredibly talented Dr. Vahid Khoshkam, a distinguished member of the ISPPS!

Talk about a flawless transformation! Dr. Khoshkam recently tackled a challenging case involving a 48-year-old female patient presenting with a single isolated recession defect on tooth #26, complicated by a very shallow vestibule and stubborn subgingival calculus.

Standard approaches just wouldn’t cut it here. To ensure absolute precision, Dr. Khoshkam utilized the Tunneled Coronally Advanced Flap () technique, paired with a connective tissue graft harvested from the tuberosity. This brilliant strategic move provided direct access and maximum visibility to thoroughly clean the root surface.

Swipe to see the results!
Just 3 weeks post-op and the outcomes are nothing short of spectacular:
* 100% Complete Root Coverage
* Remarkable Periodontal Phenotype Modification
* Beautifully restored tissue health and aesthetics!

This is the exact level of skill, innovation, and dedication to patient care that defines the ISPPS community. Phenomenal work, Dr. Khoshkam! Thank you for continuously raising the bar in periodontics.
