The Musée d'Orsay (the grand museum housed in a converted 19th-century train station on the Seine) is devoting its first-ever major exhibition to Mary Cassatt, opening October 6, 2026.
For an artist this significant, the wait has been extraordinary. Cassatt was the only American to exhibit alongside the French Impressionists, showing with Degas, Monet, Renoir, and Pissarro four times between 1879 and 1886. She lived in France for six decades. And yet, no French national museum had ever given her a major solo show.
The exhibition, titled "The Choice of Independence," brings together nearly 80 paintings, pastels, and prints tracing her full career. It explores her signature themes: women reading, attending the theater, raising children, and navigating modern life with quiet confidence. It also highlights a less-known side of Cassatt, her role as a trusted advisor to American collectors, helping shape some of the great Impressionist collections now held in museums across the United States.
The show was organized in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and runs through January 31, 2027.

At this year's The Art of the Portrait conference, our Kinstler Mentorship Program mentor Timothy Rees had the pleasure of presenting a replica Sargent palette to his mentee, Jess Le Clerc - Fine Art! The Portrait Society created this mentoring fellowship in which accepted applicants would partner for a one-year period with a mentor who will offer guidance from self and external critique of portfolios, to refinement of work habits and guidance on individual projects. The Mentorship Program seeks to build a synergy of methods cultivating a healthy artistic practice in every level of growth and development. Congratulations to Jess, and thank you to Tim!
