Solutions from the Land

Solutions from the Land We are sponsored by Farm Foundation, NFP and The Nature Conservancy.

Solutions from the Land is a national dialogue led by agriculture, forestry and conservation thought leaders to help landowners and managers make the most of the land’s potential. Farmers, ranchers, and foresters are managing an increasingly complex and interrelated set of challenges: a growing population to feed, a changing climate, and the loss of ecosystem integrity. Addressing these issues req

uires collaboration among the agriculture, forestry and conservation sectors. The Solutions from the Land (SFL) initiative brings together a broad range of stakeholders to explore the development of integrated sustainable solutions to the challenges of climate change, food security, economic development, and biodiversity conservation.

It was great reconnecting with our partners at Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture's annual meeting this week where I had the opportunity to talk about From The Ground Up Project and CHEERS, two USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture -funded SAS projects where farmers and researchers are co-designing on-farm research experiments that seek to scale the implantation of pragmatic conservation systems that generate outcomes that producers need: profitability, yield stability, and improved reliance. Happy to report that our novel co-creation model was well received.

SfL applauds and celebrates the U.S. House of Representatives' passage yesterday of H.R. 1346, the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act. This measure will allow year-round, nationwide sale of E15 fuel blends. Now it’s the U.S. Senate’s turn to act to lower fuel prices, improve air quality, and unlock domestic energy production that benefits farmers, the public, and the planet. Another step on the way to achieving the legacy 25x’25 renewable energy goal.

25x’25 is a legacy project of Solutions from the Land. The original vision of this project was that by 2025, America’s farms, forests and ranches would provide 25 percent of the total energy consumed in the United States, while continuing to produce safe, abundant, and affordable food, feed and ...

Statement on the passing of Ted Turner
(November 19, 1938 to May 6, 2026)

Solutions from the Land (SfL) mourns the passing of Ted Turner—philanthropist, media magnate, and longtime backer of SfL. In 2004, at the invitation of the United Nations Foundation backed by a grant from the Turner Foundation, we brought together a group of catalytic farmer leaders who explored agriculture’s role in America’s energy future. That led to the formation of the 25x’25 Renewable Energy Alliance which secured endorsement of nearly 1,000 partners, including 35 governors, 15 state legislatures, 34 U.S. Senators, 70 U.S. Representatives, and the U.S. Congress as a whole, through the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 for the following ambitious goal:

“By 2025, America’s farms, forests and ranches would provide 25 percent of the total energy consumed in the United States, while continuing to produce safe, abundant, and affordable food, feed, and fiber.”

Over the years, Ted’s generous financial contributions funded much of our work, including our Native Pollinators in Agriculture project, our decades long Climate Smart Agriculture work, and the formation of Solutions from the Land in 2014, as a not-for-profit corporation that works to advance land-based solutions to global challenges.

Ted’s steadfast and unwavering support for our farmer-rancher-forester led grassroots movement was instrumental in the success we have achieved in shaping the adoption of pragmatic agricultural policies around the world. SfL celebrates Ted’s life and extends our condolences to his family and friends.

Two of SfL’s farmer leaders have had Op-Eds published this year by The Invading Sea

We would like to draw your attention to the following and have you share your thoughts in the comments:

Meghan Austin’s piece on Keeping Florida’s working lands green - Op-Eds - Solutions from the Land: https://www.theinvadingsea.com/2026/03/10/dairy-farm-marianna-florida-southern-craft-creamery-pasture-rotational-grazing-climate-smart/

Timonthy Solano’s piece on Improving Florida water quality, one clam at a time | The Invading Sea: https://www.theinvadingsea.com/2026/02/24/cedar-key-clams-aquaculture-ecosystem-services-florida-smart-agriculture-water-quality-red-tide/

Smaller, pasture-based farms like ours can be innovators in animal welfare, soil health and water management.

Sending congrats to SfL Board member Dr. Lois Wright Morton on the publication of her latest paper: “Transformation of Soil and Water Properties in Agricultural Lands by Military Activity: Perspectives and Guiding Principles for the Reconstruction of War-Ravaged Agricultural Lands and Waters” in Vol. 2 (2026) of Pollution and Diseases https://pollution-diseases-ojs.org/index.php/pd/issue/view/1

This paper grew out of guiding principles SfL constructed on this subject.

Well done, Lois!

In honor of Earth Day, Agri-Pulse Communications, Inc. published an Op-Ed today penned by farmers helping co-lead From The Ground Up Project (FTGUp), a novel collaboration that Solutions from the Land is facilitating. Through FTGUp, farmers and scientists are working to improve real-world, on-farm performance of conservation practices to ensure they better generate the outcomes – e.g. profitability, yield stability, and protection from extreme weather events – that farmers need.

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) has a High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) that is now developing its 4th “Note on critical, emerging and enduring issues.” The V0 draft identifies ten key issues affecting food security and nutrition.

You can review the V0 draft here: https://sfcs.fao.org/docs/devhlpelibraries/default-document-library/ceei-v0-draft.pdf?sfvrsn=5b6942aa_1

Last week, in response to their invitation to provide input on the V0 draft, SfL submitted comments and encouraged the experts to add two items to their list: the rapidly growing challenge of invasive species (which compromises FSN and accelerates biodiversity loss/degradation) and the need to accelerate the restoration of war-ravaged agricultural lands.

You can read SfL’s submission here:https://www.solutionsfromtheland.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/SfL-input-into-4th-Note-on-Critical-Emerging-and-Enduring-Issues-2026.04.16-1.pdf

Would any of our followers and supporters like to weigh in with their take on these issues?

Last week at the 7th BioAg World Congress & Expo in Valencia, Spain, Dr. Luke S. Flory, a SfL Envoy and Director of the University of Florida’s Invasion Science Institute, introduced the critical challenge topic of invasive species at the opening workshop. Luke also reinforced SfL’s call to action for global multi-stakeholder, cross-boundary collaboration to address this growing challenge.
