Hi friends! I know I haven’t posted in a while and it’s been on my heart to do so, it’s just been a really needed brain vacation from social media. I have been in the rescue world for foreverrrr, and O&F started in 2015 (501 status in 2017) and this many years of being everything for all aspects of O&F just really took a toll. In real life I’m very introverted, so starting this nonprofit I knew I was going to have to be uncomfortable sometimes, I just really couldn’t have prepared myself for the full toll it would take- from the actual physical labor of taking care of the animals to feeling so raw and vulnerable trying to ensure I was sharing their stories appropriately (plus grief, money stress , “know it alls” on the internet being unnecessarily cruel, pressure, etc) . To be honest, thinking about social media so much really kind of made me not present for so much right in front of me.
I’ve been taking some time to recenter, which comes with its own huge helping of guilt because the truth is, we still need donations. Just because we haven’t been intaking as much anymore doesn’t mean we aren’t still as active as we ever were, as we have over 120 rescued animals we care for everyday, and the vast majority of them are aging/elderly.
I kind of came to a breaking point where I couldn’t do it ALL very well anymore, so I just wanted to make sure I was doing the actual caretaking part the best.
On top of that, and various human family charged/stress like everyone has, this summer has been absolutely BRUTAL. The heat has been awful, it’s so dry and hot and gross it takes every bit of life in me to take care of everyone else. I just needed a break.
However, we are still here ❤️
Please don’t forget about us while I’m trying to heal my own heart and brain for once in a decade, If anything we need you now more than ever. It’s taken a lot of growth and healing to know when to say, “self, just focus on this, the rest will work out”.
Rescue work is not an easy way to spend your life, and while it’s always been about the animals here, pretending the human side doesn’t matter is foolish, as it’s us humans who have to be able to show up for them ❤️
As a peace offering, here’s a couple pics of how Milo has spent his summer, lounging around in full pout mode because it’s too hot to go bark at every leaf and terrorize all his dog friends. Just laying around eating bread off of counters and trying to steal cat turds…. Poor Milo 😅🤣
If you’ve got a few bucks to spare, we could sure use them! We’ve been trucking along per usual just quieter, but I’ll be ready to be more social soon, I promise. ❤️
