On the morning of August 25, 2026, at approximately 0251; LVFD in conjunction with Niobrara County Rural Fire District, responded to “smoke and flames” on Hat Creek Road. On arrival, a 1.25 acre timber fire started by lightning on state land was ablaze. The firemen extinguished the flames and Fire 2 released the scene to State Forestry.

On August 8th, 2026 at approximately 2118; LVFD was paged to a single motorcycle crash with two injured. As 14-100 and MS 54 with Lusk EMS arrived on scene, it was verified Life Flight would be needed. The patients would be transferred to Manville where the Three Sisters Truck Stop was the optimal landing zone for the chopper. After the first patient was loaded and sent underway, the second would be transferred to Niobrara County Hospital.

This is yet again another testament of how it takes a community. Emergency Medical Technicians and their priceless hours of training are vital to the operation. Volunteers are always needed. Maybe you could be that one who steps up, trains, and can be the one who helps when needed

We really couldn’t do this without our Niobrara County Rural Fire District, Niobrara County Ranchers, and Niobrara County Sheriff’s Office. Days like today really show how a community can come together and get things done!

On July 31, 2026 at approximately 1830; LVFD and Niobrara County Rural Fire District were paged to a grass fire East of Lusk on Shane Rd.

Upon arrival, there were two more fires started in the area by lightning and a report of one south of Van Tassell. At the same time, there was a report of one North of Lance Creek on N Lance Creek Rd. also started by lightning. The fires were contained and put out. Within minutes, there was a page to a fire on Petz Rd. North of Lusk in the breaks. Personnel put out smoldering embers and returned to service.

LVFD and Niobrara County Rural Fire have been paged to multiple wild land fires. Several have been contained, but firefighters are working on getting to one in the brakes. Beware of fire trucks around the county.

07/29/2026

On the evening of July 26, 2026 at approximately 1638; LVFD was paged to a fire on Highway 270. While in route, firefighters were notified the incident was a structure fire.

Fire 1, immediately called for a structure crew. Upon arrival, it was apparent the structure was lost. Responding units were: Engine 14-20 with a crew of three, 14-12, 14,13, 14-14, all with crews of 2, Tender 14-33 and Lusk EMS. Niobrara Country Rural Fire District also responded with multiple trucks to help contain the fire.

07/26/2026

On July 25th at approximately 1648; LVFD and Niobrara County Rural Fire District were paged to a wild land fire on Jireh Road. As responding units closed in on the smoke plume, it was evident the fire was not in Niobrara County. 14-13 with a crew of two, and three NCRFD trucks continued in pursuit to verify location.
Once at the “Horse Tooth Fire”, the firemen battled the blaze with limited water and hand tools afoot. Once forward progress was stopped, the crews were released and returned to service back home.

6AM 7/26 - The heat wave will reach its peak on Sunday, with another round of record breaking high temperatures expected across the area. Most locations have approximately a 10% chance to tie the all-time hottest temperature recorded today.

In addition, another round of widely scattered high-based showers and thunderstorms is expected this afternoon and evening. Coverage will be a little less compared to yesterday, but storms will still have the potential to produce lightning and gusty/erratic winds. Be weather aware if you have outdoor plans today!

Note: Due to a decrease in the forecast high temperatures for Monday, the Heat Advisory and Extreme Heat Warning will now expire at 9PM today.

On July 23rd, later in the evening, at approximately 2314; LVFD was paged to a car accident on Main Street in Lusk. On scene, a hit and run was discovered. During the scene size up, there was no occupant found in the vehicle as they had fled the scene. Responding units were 14-100 with a crew of two and 14-200 with a crew of two.
