Virginia lost 400 farms last year.
According to a new report from USDA, Virginia lost approx. 400 farms last year (2025). That's slightly more than one farm per day.
Most of those farms lost were small in scale, with sales under $100,000.
Quick note for comparison:
KY lost 1,400 farms
NC lost 800 farms
NY lost 500 farms
OH lost 400 farms
PA lost 400 farms
TN lost 400 farms
GA lost 300 farms
WV lost 100 farms
SC lost 100 farms
MD lost 0 farms
Note: The report clearly states that these are estimates (with the biggest clue being that all the numbers end with "00." The ACTUAL numbers are only measured every 5 years with the Ag Census (2027 is the next one). As far as the procedure for estimating, here is a direct quote from the report:
"Estimation Procedures: In 2025, the modeling effort incorporated historic trends and previous ten years of survey estimates. This stop-gap approach allowed the data series to continue and was roughly consistent with prior year procedures when survey data were available. Estimates were established under secure conditions to protect reports until they were publicly released at preannounced dates and times. Headquarters established national estimates and ensured that state estimates are in balance with the national numbers."
Additional details about the methodology are available at the end of the report.
