This is Georgia's private lands powerhouse in action!

This rare sight is all our Private Lands Biologists from across Georgia in one room! Quail Forever Biologists and GADNR Private Lands Biologist, met to discuss preliminary data analysis from our Working Lands for Wildlife Outcomes Assessment project and new projects that will be coming from GADNR. We reviewed decision support tools to help landowners balancing timber revenue and quail management. Also, planning for upcoming bobwhite quail surveys on public lands and so much more!

Of course, you can't keep biologists inside all day. In there afternoon we enjoyed time in the woods with our wonderful hosts at Whitehall Plantation.

Woah woah woah, let's get this straight...

A Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) is essentially a club of people, just like you, who care about wildlife, habitat management, and connecting communities through the use of prescribed fire. This sounds like an awesome club that everyone should be a part of! Landowners in Southeast Georgia have the opportunity to be a part of this club and be a part of something new! Come join the GADNR and conservation partners at a PBA Interest Meeting and Learn and Burn at Laura S. Walker State Park on October 30th!

Do you have to own land? nope!
Do you have to have experience with prescribed fire? nope!
Do you have to want to learn something new? Yes!
Do you have to want to connect to like minded people in your community? Yes!

Come out and show you support of such a group! Registration is Free!

Did you know that Quail Forever has over 400 Biologists across the county assisting private landowners at no charge? Our biologists help landowners by providing habitat management recommendations, write property specific management plans, and help those landowners navigate cost-share programs.

One of our biologists in Georgia, Ryan Finely, has been assisting a landowner in Laurens County for the past two years. During that time, Ryan has helped this landowner through the implementation of conservation practices in his first cost-share contract with the GADNR Bobwhite Quail Initiative. After successfully completing the management in his first contract, Ryan assisted this landowner with applying and receiving a second contract to continue their management. This time, Ryan is also conducting breeding bird surveys on the property to document return of grassland birds, including bobwhite quail, to the property.

Ryan says this property is already so unique. He’s felt fortunate to watch the habitat respond to active management, particularly with prescribed fire, on the property. Ryan credits that watching his landowners succeed and quality habitat being restored, has been one of the most rewarding aspects of his work.

Whether it's the sight of vibrant wildflowers blooming after a prescribed burn or the melodious calls of returning grassland birds, each moment reaffirms the impact of dedicated conservation efforts though habitat management. Ryan’s story is one of many examples from the thousands of private landowners contributing to the conservation of our wildlife and natural resources.

Our biologists are not just serving up managment plans, they've got jokes too.

Why did the quail cross the road?

Sometimes the best thing you can do for wildlife is light a match.

This summer, QF Sr. Biologist,Nathan Eldridge joined our habitat team conducting a prescribed burn at Elmodel WMA. This targeted one of the Southeast's most ecologically important grasses: Southern Wiregrass (Aristida beyrichiana).

Timing is everything when managing wiregrass. Burning during lightning season (May–July), late in the growing season, encourages the grass to stand upright, flower, and produce viable seed. Burn too early, or skip the fire altogether, and wiregrass droops and mats down into a dense, tangled layer that blocks the open corridors bobwhite quail and other wildlife depend on to move between grass bunches. Wiregrass spreads very slowly on its own, and without regular burns, woody shrubs and leaf litter accumulate, closing the overstory canopy and crowding out the open, grassy habitat that makes these areas so valuable. No corridors, no quail.

So why did the quail cross the road? To get out of the way of the prescribed fire!
