Join us for a walk along the Paunacussing Creek with Diane Smith, Director of Education at Honey Hollow Nature Center. Diane will help us identify birds by sight and sound while sharing insights into their behaviors, habitats, and seasonal movements. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just curious, this walk is a great way to connect with nature and discover the incredible birdlife right in our backyard.

We had a wonderful turnout for our second community macroinvertebrate creek survey.

Participants spent the morning exploring a wide variety of creek critters — from quick‑moving nymphs to tiny armored crawlers — each offering clues about the health of the Paunacussing Creek. It was a chance to slow down, look closely, and discover just how much life thrives beneath the surface.

Thank you to everyone who stepped into the water with us, asked great questions, and helped make this hands‑on learning experience such a meaningful community moment.

Those faded browns and golds on the ground aren’t just leftovers from fall, they are shelter. Many of our most important pollinators spend the winter tucked inside leaf litter: fireflies overwinter as larvae, native bees nest in hollow stems and under leaves, and butterflies like the mourning cloak. They rely on that insulating layer to survive any early Spring cold snaps.

When we rake too early, we expose them before they have had a chance to emerge.

Giving the leaf layer a few extra weeks protects the insects that will soon bring an every changing set of colors.

A little patience now means a brighter, more vibrant season ahead.

The PWA one hour introduction to stream sampling protocol was a big success.  Our instructor, Nick Macelko, took participants through the correct way to collect creek samples and evaluate the physical habitat for riffle/run prevalence.

Thanks to the group for your interest in protecting and preserving or valuable natural resources... our waterways.

Become a Certified Stream Sampler and help protect our local waterways! You’ll learn how to collect aquatic critters, identify stream habitats like riffles and pools, and contribute to a long-term database that keeps our local streams healthy.
