Service and Compassion in Action: HIRF is dedicated to serving Sierra Leone's underprivileged and economically disadvantaged through the provision of comprehensive initiatives in healthcare, education, economic empowerment, and disaster response. Healey International Relief Foundation (HealeyIRF) is a US registered 501c3 organization working tirelessly to address pressing challenges in Sierra Leone for the past 22 years with a particular focus on health systems strengthening, sustainable farming and disaster response. Together with its collaborating partners, the foundation has invested in capacity building through training, direct program implementation and donations of medicines, medical, agricultural and educational supplies and equipment, food and financial assistance. We have achieved significant milestones by partnering with local communities, local governments, and international organizations to implement sustainable solutions that continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

Supporting mothers and children in Bo 💛

Thanks to our partnership with Vitamin Angels, HIRF recently delivered prenatal vitamins, albendazole (deworming medication), and vitamin A to Kindoya Hospital in Bo.

Kindoya Hospital is a valuable resource for women and children in the Bo area, and these supplies will help support healthier pregnancies and protect young children from preventable illness.

In the under-five clinic at Loreto Health Services in Makeni, staff may see 50 to 80 children in a single day.

Founded in 1956 and rebuilt after Sierra Leone’s civil war, Loreto cares for more than 2,000 patients a month. Some travel from as far as Guinea for epilepsy treatment they can’t get closer to home.

Meet Sister Victoria, Sister Philomena, and Isahi, the people who keep Loreto going. Through partnerships with Vitamin Angels , ROW Foundation, International Health Partners and MAP International, HIRF helps make sure they have the medicines their patients need.

Today our team marched in Freetown for World Mental Health Day, because mental health care should be within reach for everyone in Sierra Leone.

This year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” is a call to listen to people living with mental health conditions, break down stigma, and let their experiences shape the care they receive.

At HIRF, our growing mental health work includes a focus on perinatal mental health: supporting women during pregnancy and after childbirth, when their needs are too often overlooked. We’re training health workers, advocating for better services, and partnering with the government to improve access to essential mental health medications.

NCDI Project Update: From Baseline to Action

As CMMB's implementing partner for the Noncommunicable Disease Initiative (NCDI) in Sierra Leone, HIRF has completed baseline surveys and begun training at selected health facilities across the country. The first training was held at Holy Spirit Hospital in Makeni, covering 3 facilities, and is now ongoing at Mercy Hospital in Bo for an additional 4 participating facilities.

This initiative is designed to ensure continuous NCD care at primary health care facilities by addressing root causes of medicine stockouts and supporting data-driven decision-making for sustainable healthcare financing. Training sessions cover data quality, inventory and stock management, pharmacovigilance, and screening and management of hypertension and diabetes cases. The sessions have been highly interactive, with active participation and engagement from participants throughout.

With hypertension now accounting for 11% of diagnosed cases at HIRF-supported facilities — and 37% among pregnant women — this work is critical to building the long-term systems needed to manage NCDs effectively.

📣𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨.

As Sierra Leone’s 300 Days of Activism for Triple Zero reaches a critical milestone, Healey International Relief Foundation in partnership with Tenki for Born, Helping Children Worldwide, and the Ministry of Health are proud to support the country’s efforts to improve care for mothers, newborns, and children.

HIRF’s support brings together the people, skills, medicines and technology needed to strengthen care. More than 250 midwives and nurses have participated in training in Bo, Kenema, and Tonkolili. HIRF has also supported ultrasound training and, with its partners, donated ultrasound equipment, helping health workers identify potential complications.

Critical medicines and supplies are another important part of this work. These include antibiotics and medicines used in the management of postpartum hemorrhage and preeclampsia—two serious threats to maternal health.

Together, these efforts help ensure that frontline health workers across Sierra Leone have the knowledge, tools and resources they need to provide safer, stronger care.

As the campaign enters its final 100 days, HIRF and its partners remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone’s work toward healthier mothers, newborns and children.

As part of HIRF’s ongoing efforts to support mothers and children through our partner health facilities, our Supplemental Rice Program is helping provide additional food support during important stages of care.

We are grateful to the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation for generously donating the rice that makes this program possible. Eighteen health facilities across Sierra Leone will receive rice through the program to support mothers and children.

Recently, St. Luke’s Clinic in Gerihun distributed this rice to new mothers. By working through trusted local health facilities, HIRF is helping extend support beyond medical care and respond to the everyday needs of mothers and children.

We are grateful to the staff at St. Luke’s Clinic for their continued commitment to the communities they serve, and we again thank the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation for the donation of rice.
