Together with its collaborating partners, the foundation has invested in capacity building through training, direct program implementation and donations of medicines, medical, agricultural and educational supplies and equipment, food and financial assistance. We have achieved significant milestones by partnering with local communities, local governments, and international organizations to implement sustainable solutions that continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

As part of our ongoing work to improve women’s healthcare in Sierra Leone, we’re proud to share our recent donation of fistula surgical kits to Aberdeen Women’s Center. This effort was made possible thanks to a partnership with MAP International and Johnson & Johnson.

Too many women in Sierra Leone continue to live with this preventable and treatable condition. It remains a serious health challenge in many parts of the world due to limited access to timely care.

The good news is that with proper surgical treatment, women can heal and move forward with their lives. We are proud to support the incredible work being done at Aberdeen Women’s Center to restore health, dignity, and hope.

Another busy day in Bo for our Epilepsy Training! We kicked off with classroom instruction on epilepsy first aid, equipping community health workers with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively and safely. The training also included community sensitization, raising awareness and helping to break down myths and stigma surrounding epilepsy.

In addition, the Epilepsy Association of Sierra Leone led a school outreach at Holy Rosary School. Students were introduced to epilepsy and learned how they can support classmates and others in their community. Empowering young people with this understanding is an important step toward reducing stigma and creating more supportive environments for everyone.

Thanks to Medics For Epilepsy Support & Treatment for conducting training, and to ROW Foundation Fights Epilepsy for supporting this training and their long-standing commitment to improving the lives of people with epilepsy through the provision of medication.

Training is underway in Bo as eight community health workers participate in intensive training focused on understanding epilepsy, including its causes, signs, symptoms, and treatment. The project is supported by Rotary International and implemented by HIRF, ROW Foundation Fights Epilepsy, and the Epilepsy Association of Sierra Leone.

Earlier training sessions were held in Bombali District in February, with additional training scheduled next week in Pujehun. The initiative aims to equip health workers with the skills to recognize and treat epilepsy while also engaging communities and schools to replace fear and stigma with understanding, awareness, and compassion.

Day One began with an Introduction to Epilepsy, providing participants with foundational knowledge on the condition and the challenges faced by individuals living with epilepsy. Participants also explored Traditional Beliefs and Epilepsy, examining common misconceptions and the importance of community education in reducing stigma. The day concluded with a session on the Importance of Medication in Epilepsy Management, emphasizing the role of consistent treatment in controlling seizures and improving quality of life.

Additional sessions throughout the week will focus on seizure first aid, community engagement, advocacy, data collection, and psychosocial support.

HIRF was proud to participate in the 3rd Annual Baby Show at St. Anthony’s Clinic in Freetown—a joyful event that highlights the importance of antenatal care in maternal health.

These baby shows recognize mothers who consistently attend their clinic appointments and take important steps toward safe pregnancies and healthy babies.

Fathers who accompany mothers to health visits are also acknowledged, reinforcing the important role men play in the birth journey. Studies show that men’s active participation can foster more engaged parenting and help reduce gender inequalities.

Thanks also to all the health workers who continue to support these mothers and families every day with dedication and care.

Together, we are strengthening families and building healthier communities. 👶🏽✨

At Healey International Relief Foundation, we believe improving maternal and child health requires a comprehensive, whole-of-care approach—bringing together skilled healthcare providers, quality clinical care, proper nutrition, prevention, and strong community support.

In Bo District, this approach is currently in action. Our team is leading intensive trainings for midwives at the Bo Midwifery School on 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘦 (𝘏𝘔𝘚), 𝘌𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 1 (𝘌𝘕𝘊 1), and 𝘌𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 2 (𝘌𝘕𝘊 2)—strengthening the clinical skills needed to ensure safer pregnancies, deliveries, and newborn care.

At the same time, our partners from Vitamin Angels are conducting intensive training sessions at the Bo Town Council Conference Center, equipping an additional 40 midwives and nurses with the knowledge and tools to effectively deliver Prenatal Vitamins, deworming interventions, and Vitamin A supplementation.

Together, these parallel efforts demonstrate the power of partnership—building both clinical capacity and nutrition expertise to improve outcomes for mothers and children.

Each year, HIRF distributes prenatal vitamins, supporting 25,650 pregnant women, while Vitamin A supplementation and deworming programs reach more than 100,000 children across Sierra Leone.

Together, we are equipping health workers, supporting mothers, and giving children a healthier start in life.

In Bo this week, 50 midwives and nurses have come together for hands-on advanced training focused on postpartum hemorrhage management and essential newborn care — two critical areas in the fight to reduce maternal and infant mortality in Sierra Leone.

This Rotary supported training has
international and national trainers and physicians, nurses and midwives working alongside each other to strengthen lifesaving clinical skills that will directly impact mothers, newborns, and families across their communities.

One of the most powerful moments of the opening day came from the District Medical Officer, who recognized previous trainings led through this partnership as some of the most thoughtful, high-quality, and impactful the district has seen. The work was also acknowledged as part of Sierra Leone’s broader response to President Bio’s 300 Days of Activism initiative focused on reducing maternal and child deaths nationwide.

This training initiative, which has previously been held in the Bo, Kenema, and Tonkolili districts, continues to invest in frontline healthcare workers and strengthen local health systems across Sierra Leone. By building practical skills and expanding access to quality maternal and newborn care training, the initiative is helping equip nurses and midwives with tools that can save lives in communities throughout the country. We are grateful to all of the partners participating in and supporting this critical effort.

We recently concluded a powerful three-day Capacity Building Conference for women-led organizations.

The workshop focused on strengthening skills in areas such as Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) and Grant Writing, equipping participants with practical tools.

Thanks to everyone who attended and actively participated, including representatives from Uman Tok, Every Woman Sierra Leone, and 's Hope Foundation Sierra Leone . Together, we’re building stronger organizations for greater impact.

On World Maternal Mental Health Day, we recognize that maternal health is more than physical care—it includes emotional and psychological well-being.

Building on years of advocacy and grassroots engagement, Healey International Relief Foundation (HIRF) is expanding mental health programming with a focus on perinatal mental health, supporting women during pregnancy and after childbirth, when mental health needs are often overlooked but deeply consequential.

HIRF and its partners are also preparing to host another Maternal and Newborn Care Conference in Bo, with a strong emphasis on addressing the mental health needs of mothers and frontline healthcare workers. Through these conferences, we continue raising awareness among healthcare professionals about recognizing and responding to mental health challenges during and after pregnancy.

HIRF, in partnership with Uman Tok, is currently hosting a 3‑day capacity‑building workshop in Freetown. The workshop brings together participants from Uman Tok Sierra Leone, Every Woman Sierra Leone, and Berny's Hope Foundation Sierra Leone for sessions on monitoring and evaluation, safeguarding, grant writing, and Microsoft Office Skills.

The workshop is also providing a platform for participants to engage in discussions, share experiences, and exchange best practices on program implementation and organizational development.

This initiative is funded by Comic Relief and is a three-year program aimed at strengthening the capacity of these three women-led organizations.
