The “Sacred Heart icon” (a common Catholic image of Jesus’s heart—often surrounded by flames, crowned with thorns, and sometimes shown being offered or pierced—frequently with a cross) is important not mainly as a sentimental picture, but as a visual way of contemplating Jesus Christ himself, especially his wounded, merciful love revealed through the Cross.

Catholic teaching insists that the Sacred Heart devotion is not devotion to “an organ” apart from Christ. Rather, when the Church uses the heart as the image, it means the entire mystery of Christ and the inmost core of his Person—the divine-human love he has for the Father and for us.

Pope Francis summarizes the key point for iconography:
“Devotion to the heart of Christ is not the veneration of a single organ apart from the Person of Jesus… What we contemplate and adore is the whole Jesus Christ… represented by an image that accentuates his heart.”

Directory on Popular Piety notes why iconographic expression matters: images can shape how people appreciate the devotion’s object, so the image should not distract from the “robust theological content” of the Sacred Heart.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Icon continued its journey to Lumberton, TX Infant Jesus Catholic Church. Thanks to Father Tino, Bill Miller, Troy Parker, Fred Bartz, Pat Campo, Terry Bennett, Tommy Ehrensberger Sr.
