Ludlow Rotary Receives Grant for Okemo Valley Swiftwater Rescue Team

Ludlow Rotary received a Global Grant to fund the Okemo Valley Swiftwater Rescue Team (OVSRT) in the amount of $62,922. The grant will fund training and equipment to outfit 15 emergency personnel in techniques for making rushing water and other technical rescues while remaining safe themselves. Safety for our local emergency personnel was a key factor in receiving the Global Grant from Rotary International(RI).

The grant is part of the emergency response recovery program of Rotary International. It was funded by a collaboration of Rotary Clubs from Ludlow, and surrounding area clubs; individual Rotarians in southern Vermont and Swellendam, South Africa; a club in Moinabad, Telangana, India; the Rotary District of Southern VT and NH; and the RI World Fund.

After the devastating flood in 2023, the Ludlow Rotary Club received numerous generous donations for flood recovery. As a Club they decided to keep $15,000 of those donations for a project that would benefit all four communities served by the Club. When the Technical Rescue team was selected to receive the funds, it was suggested that those funds could be enhanced by the new RI emergency response grants, if international partners could be found. The Club has spent the past year and a half securing the necessary partners and putting the funding together with Ben Whalen, vice president of the Technical Rescue Squad.

The Okemo Valley Swiftwater Rescue Team is composed of emergency personnel from Cavendish, Ludlow, Mount Holly and Plymouth. Whalen indicated the equipment and training will help protect the emergency personnel of all 4 communities, many of whom are volunteers, in addition to the public who face danger in the face of increasing weather and related hazards. Many of those trained recently said it was the best training they had ever had.

Ludlow Rotary Hears about Internet Safety

Ludlow Rotary heard horror stories about scams and frauds from M&T Bank branch manager, Art Randolph at a recent meeting. Randolph, a long time Rotarian, provided written and verbal details of how to avoid becoming a victim of such scams.

He cautioned that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. He also said count to ten on any call, text or email which is suspicious. He urged skepticism and further checking the source of emails which are possibly a fake from what is believed to be a familiar source, by hovering over the sender address to see whether the sender is valid. Oftentimes they look like a familiar business or contact, but the email will not be from that source. Those are all scams.

People in our communities are falling victim to scams daily. The bank makes an effort to discourage withdrawal of unusual amounts of funds from individual accounts for what they have found to be fraudulent sources. Randolph also cautioned, "never let a stranger come to your home to pick up large amounts of cash, regardless if they say it is for a loved one." Take it slowly and never act with urgency to be safe.

As the world faces increasing challenges, the Ludlow Rotary Club is reaffirming its commitment to the dual pillars of Community Service and World Peace and Conflict Resolution. Local Rotarians invite community members to join their mission of "Service Above Self" to create positive change starting right here in the Okemo Valley. LRC meets most Tuesdays at DJ’s at 12:15 p.m. We invite others to have lunch with us to learn about what we do. Visit us at www.ludlowrotary.com or like us on Facebook!

🤝 June is Rotary Fellowship Month! ⚙️✨

While Rotarians are known for rolling up their sleeves and getting to work, June is all about celebrating the bond that makes that work possible: Fellowship.

At the Ludlow Rotary Club, "Service Above Self" is our guiding light, but fellowship is the fuel that keeps us going. It’s the laughter shared over breakfast, the camaraderie built while setting up local events, and the lifelong friendships formed across different generations and backgrounds right here in the Black River Valley.

What Does Fellowship Mean to Us?
A Welcoming Table: We gather not just as colleagues, but as neighbors and friends who genuinely enjoy each other's company.

Diverse Perspectives: Our club brings together local business owners, retirees, educators, and community leaders, creating a rich tapestry of ideas and shared experiences.

Global Connections: Rotary Fellowship extends far beyond Ludlow, Mount Holly, Plymouth or Cavendish. It connects us to a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers.

❤️ The Best Part of Rotary is the People
From organizing the annual Duck Race to supporting local food shelves and student scholarships, every project is a chance to connect, collaborate, and have fun. We don't just serve the community together—we celebrate life together.

"Fellowship is wonderful; it illuminates life's pathway, spreads good cheer, and is worth high cultivation."
— Paul Harris, Rotary Founder

Service Above Self: Remembering Our Heroes
This Memorial Day 🇺🇸

As Memorial Day weekend begins, the Ludlow Rotary Club invites our community to pause, reflect, and honor the true meaning of this day.

Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the immense cost of our freedom. Today, we hold in our hearts the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their selflessness embodies the highest form of "Service Above Self," and we owe them a debt of gratitude that can never fully be repaid.

To the Gold Star families in our community, and to all who have lost loved ones in uniform: the Ludlow Rotary stands with you in remembrance and profound respect.

As you gather with family and friends this weekend in the beautiful Okemo Valley, please join us in keeping our fallen heroes and their families in your thoughts.

"Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude." — Harry S. Truman

Jack Jacob of Wise Oak tree service addressed a recent meeting of the Ludlow Rotary Club

Jack Jacob is an arborist and lawn maintenance expert from South Londonderry who spoke to the Rotary Club about the loss of many tree species, such as Ash, American Chestnut and Elm Trees. There is also a Beech bark disease attacking local Beech trees.

A major issue facing the Northeast is the Emerald ash borer, a native of SE Asia, where there are natural controls, attacking ash trees. The first population was found in Michigan in 2002. The damage is concentrated in New England and the Midwest because of its weather conditions and large population of ash trees. The disease does not discriminate between young versus old or sick versus healthy trees.

Moving firewood is a huge problem in terms of spreading diseases. Monocultures are also a problem. Ash tree removal is the best option for larger stands because chemical treatment is too expensive for broad application at $400 to $500 per tree. Trees must be removed before they are dead to protect any arborist who must climb the tree to remove it. Rotarians had many questions for Jacob as he ended his talk.

The LRC meets Tuesdays for lunch in Ludlow. The LRC is small and is always looking to welcome new members. If you would like to attend a meeting and learn how you may 'Serve Humanity' while enjoying the fun and fellowship of others, please contact any Rotarian or drop a note to Ludlow Rotary, PO Box 216, Ludlow, Vermont.

🌍 Happy Mother’s Day from the Ludlow Rotary Club! 🌸

Today, the Ludlow Rotary Club joins the world in celebrating the incredible mothers and maternal figures who shape our lives, our community, and our global future.

Service is at the heart of everything we do, and no one embodies "Service Above Self" quite like a mother. Today, we reflect on her impact both close to home and across the globe.

🏡 Locally: Investing in Our Families

Here in Ludlow, we are proud to support programs that empower mothers and nurture the next generation. From providing scholarships for local students to supporting literacy in our schools, our club works to ensure that the families in our town have the resources they need to thrive. Every mother’s dedication to her children is the foundation upon which our community is built.

🌎 Internationally: Maternal & Child Health

Globally, Rotary International remains committed to one of our key pillars: Maternal and Child Health.

Improving Access: We work to provide mothers around the world with access to high-quality healthcare, clean water, and nutrition.

Safe Births: Rotary projects help ensure that every mother has a chance for a safe delivery and a healthy future for her child.

Empowerment: By supporting education and health initiatives, we are helping mothers in every corner of the world build more resilient communities.

❤️ A Message of Gratitude

To the moms who lead our club, the moms who volunteer at our events, and the moms everywhere making the world a kinder place—thank you. Your strength, compassion, and tireless work are the true engines of change.

Wishing all the mothers in Ludlow and beyond a day filled with the love and appreciation you so richly deserve.
