NEW carpet in Big Sable Point Lighthouse! 🥳 Take the opportunity to see it in person over the next two weekends before we close for the season on Oct. 25.

When you think about lighthouse restoration, you may think of painting, brickwork, replacing lantern room glass, or the many other projects Lakeshore Keepers has shared with the public. Many probably don't think about the wear and tear from high foot traffic inside a lighthouse, since lighthouses weren't built for the volume of guests Lakeshore Keepers sees.

In 2026 alone, Big Sable Point Lighthouse has had over 150 volunteers stay overnight and welcomed nearly 13,000 guests to tour the tower. This is a lot of foot traffic!

Due to the number of people at Big Sable over the years, it was time to replace the stair carpet runner. We hope you like it!

A small project this fall will create a new access point for visitors during the 2027 tour season at Big Sable Point Lighthouse.

Just like that, the new gift shop shed at Little Sable has been moved back to its winter location, marking the end of its first season. Thank you to all of our supporters for making donations last winter to make this site upgrade possible.

The new gift shop allowed Lakeshore Keepers to improve our accessibility at Little Sable by offering a ramp system to enter. This allowed more guests to learn about the light and support by purchasing a gift shop item.

The gift shop will return in the spring of 2027 to kick off the next season of lighthouse tours!

Do your weekend plans involve visiting a lighthouse?! Big Sable Point in Ludington State Park is the perfect October adventure. Walk or bike the 1.8-mile path through dunes and fall foliage from the state park to the lighthouse. It’s a must-see!

🍂 October at the Lighthouses 🍂 There’s something extra special about visiting a lighthouse in the fall. Cooler temperatures, colorful leaves, fewer crowds, and the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline make October a perfect time for a lighthouse adventure.

✨ Big Sable Point Lighthouse — Take in the peaceful fall scenery as you make your way through Ludington State Park to this iconic black-and-white tower. The tower is open for climbing Thurs-Sun, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

🍁 White River Light Station — Step back in time as you explore this historic light station in Whitehall. Wander through the museum, learn about the lives of the keepers who called the station home, and enjoy the beauty of the river and changing fall colors. The tower and museum are open Thurs-Sun, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Whether you’re checking another lighthouse off your list or looking for a peaceful fall day along the lakeshore, October is a beautiful time to experience our lights. ❤️
