The North Lake Detention Center in Baldwin is operated by The GEO Group. They are a “for profit” detention company that operates many of the detention centers across America. Human rights, and civil liberty groups have documented hundreds of violations at these centers. Human detainment for profit is just morally and ethically wrong in my view.
Many detainees that arrived at North Lake came during the warmer month with only the clothes that they had on, and now many are being released (through court orders, bails or bonds, or self-deportation) during the coldest months of the year (cruelty is the point) with only what they had. Many are also not receiving personal belongings that they may have had such as phones.
There are a few groups that have organized to help them when they are released. No Detention Centers in Michigan (please follow them for more information), along with Baldwin Family Support Team (there is a volunteer link portal attached to this post) are providing warm clothing, support and rides to make it home. Similar to the Underground Railroad during slavery, there is now an Overground Railroad that has developed to help many get to their destinations (most are out of state).
Now for the request, The Q is collecting supplies for this effort. New or slightly used hats, gloves, coats, socks, sweatpants, sweatshirts, and boots, think unisex, and items that will fit multiple sizes. The BIGGEST request is of course monetary, preloaded gift or visa cards are the best form for this. These help those that are voluntary drivers of this railroad pay for gas.
