Despite discouraging weather of rain, thunder and lighting, the 5th Annual Disc Golf for Haiti Tournament raised $964.25 the day of the tournament! WOW!!! Other sporting events taking place on the same day were canceled or delayed. The Mason County Disc Golf organization, Jeff Schwass and all the dedicated disc golf players were determined to raise money for the School of the Infant Jesus!
Picnic sales and donations put the total money raised from the annual tournament just shy of $1,100!
Money raised will go towards the addition of a high school to he School of the Infant Jesus. The addition would mean the only school in the Cite Militaire region offering a secondary education.

St. Simons Church has sponsored the School of the Infant Jesus for more than 15 years. The school has been managed by the Salesian Sisters since 1991. Their reputation for providing a quality education is demonstrated in the success of their pupils, as 99% of the students routinely pass their exams. In 2002 the Sisters added a third educational cycle (grades seven through nine). To this day, the School of the Infant Jesus is the only school in the area that offers an education beyond the sixth grade.
The School of the Infant Jesus provides knowledge based and spiritual substance for some of the poorest children in Port-au-Prince. In addition, for those children without a family, they also provide housing. Currently there are 500 students in grades first through sixth and 153 students in grades seventh through ninth. In the afternoon classes, there is an additional 267 students. This means the Sisters are educating, feeding, providing housing for some and providing spiritual food for all 920 students.
The St. Simons sponsorship with the School of the Infant Jesus means we assist the school financially so that the Sisters can focus on the care of the children. Some past projects we have assisted with includes the purchase and installation of a water purification system, eye exams and eye glasses for the children, and paying for the food that provides a daily meal to kids that may not otherwise have access to food.
St. Simons Hearts to Haiti outreach raises funds through various means including the annual Disc Golf for Haiti Tournament, t-shirt sales "Life styles of the Poor and Unknown," Sunday brunch on the third Sunday of every month after 8:30am and 10:30am masses at St. Simon Church, Friday Night Live booth in downtown Ludington every Friday through the month of July and participation in other local events. 100% of the proceeds from every fundraiser goes to the School of the Infant Jesus. The Hearts to Haiti outreach is directly involved with the disbursement of funds to the school as we take trips no less than once yearly to visit the school. Current and future projects to receive our support include repair/replacement of the roof, purchase of textbooks for the afternoon classes, maintenance activities (such as painting the classrooms) and the purchase of recorders.
