Statement from the Michigan Association of School Psychologists Regarding Attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield

The Michigan Association of School Psychologists strongly condemns the recent act of violence targeting Temple Israel in Michigan. Acts of hatred and intimidation directed at members of the Jewish community are deeply troubling and have no place in our schools, our communities, or our society.

Violence and antisemitism affect not only those directly targeted but also the broader sense of safety and belonging that children, families, and educators need in order to learn and thrive. Incidents like this can be deeply unsettling for students and may raise fear, confusion, or questions in our school communities.

As school psychologists, we approach these moments through a trauma-informed lens. We recognize the importance of providing spaces where students feel safe, heard, and supported. We encourage educators and school leaders to respond with compassion, to acknowledge the impact of violence and hate, and to reaffirm the values of inclusion, respect, and dignity for all. NASP has a variety of free resources for talking to children about violence, which can be found here: https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-safety-and-crisis/school-violence-resources/talking-to-children-about-violence-tips-for-families-and-educators

MASP stands ready to assist local school districts in Oakland County and beyond as they navigate these conversations

We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this attack, and all other acts of violent racism, antisemitism and bigotry. The Michigan Association of School Psychologists remains committed to supporting schools in fostering safe, inclusive environments where every student and family feels valued, protected, and able to belong.

Signed,
Charlene Mangi, M.Ed., Sp.A., NCSP
President, Michigan Association of School Psychologists

Exciting news about our advocacy efforts to address the workplace shortage issue here in Michigan!

LEO Awards $1M for 2025 School Psychologist Training Program

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) announced yesterday that they have awarded $1M, with $350,000 going to Andrews University and $650,000 to Western Michigan University to expand or launch a school psychologist training program. This investment will increase the school psychologist workforce in Michigan, support students who are facing mental health challenges and help schools navigate available resources.

ā€œInvesting in training for school psychologists is important not only for supporting the mental health and well-being of our students, but also for strengthening the pipeline of professionals in a field that is critical to both education and community health,ā€ said LEO Director Susan Corbin. ā€œLEO is committed to supporting the needs of our workforce across the state, and we’re investing in a healthier Michigan through this funding.ā€

Western Michigan University will be setting up a new school psychology program that expects to graduate 15-16 new students per year and Andrews University will be expanding current enrollment in their current program to allow for 15-20 new students per year.

LEO worked alongside the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP) on the development of the RFP. ā€œSchool psychologists in Michigan provide invaluable services to students and their families, including mental health services, evaluations, consultation and so much more,ā€ said Charlene Mangi, MASP President Elect. ā€œOur state only has five training programs, and we need more trained professionals to meet the demand. This grant will be instrumental in both creating a new training program and in expanding an existing, well-regarded program.ā€

Higher education institutions were able to apply for a portion of the $1 million available in funding to initiate enrollment in a new school psychology program or expand enrollment and develop distance education in school psychology programs.

If you're coming to Seattle for the 2025 NASP Convention, please join us for our Michigan Meet-Up!

When: 6:00 PM Tuesday, February 18th
Where: The Unicorn 1118 E. Pike St, Seattle, WA 98122

The Unicorn, with its absurd name, rampant stripes, salvaged carousel panels, and menagerie of taxidermy, is insane. The bar serves Jell-O shots, and the place gets wild. The food is carnival-style deep-fry, including various corn-dog configurations, unicorn balls, and elephant ears, as well as good, inexpensive burgers made with Painted Hills beef.

It's a 24-minute walk from the Hyatt so plan accordingly. Here's a link to directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2rQWAcQhoMatx7C9A

Hope to see you there!
