Red Tailed Hawk (Patient 26-0282) was brought to our rehab clinic after being displaced from its nest. We performed an examination of the hawk in our raptor clinic. The hawk was "hock sitting" and unable to stand. X-rays showed a fracture in the right pelvis. No other injuries were found. After 6 days, the young hawk was attempting to stand for short periods of time. After 20 days, the hawk was standing at the door of its kennel and grabbed the foot tray with its foot. We like to see feisty birds! After another two days, it was standing very well. The hawk will stay in our Intensive Care Unit until it is ready and old enough to be placed in an outdoor aviary for continued rehab.

There’s another new face at Cascades Raptor Center. We are thrilled to introduce you to Aesop, the Black Vulture!

Aesop was found as a nestling at a demolition site in August 2025 in Lucas, Texas. In the couple of weeks between being found and being brought to Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, he learned that both food and interactions come from humans, instead of his Black Vulture parents. This was a permanent change in his brain that would make life as a wild vulture complicated and challenging. Aesop's origin story is another reminder to call your nearest wildlife rehabilitator immediately if you ever find a young wild animal.

Aesop joined the Cascades Raptor Center team in May 2026 and thanks to the skilled trainers at Blackland Prairie, he came with a solid repertoire of trained behaviors and is quickly on his way to joining our free flight team!

This Mississippi Kite gives a tilt of its head during an examination in our rehab clinic.
Birds' bodies are perfectly adapted for flying. They have light bones that are mostly hollow, but still strong. Their big hearts and lungs can collect lots of oxygen with every breath.

As a Reception Volunteer, you will:
📞 Provide donor acknowledgment support through thank-you phone calls and handwritten notes
📬 Manage outgoing mail
☎️ Answer the main phone line
📝 Assist raptor drop-off visitors with completing patient admission forms
Volunteer Shifts Available:
📅 Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday
⏰ 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Did you know the word "snail" has been part of the English language for over a thousand years? The Online Etymology Dictionary says it comes from the Old English "snægl," which traces back to an ancient Germanic root for "crawling" or "creeping creatures." Merriam-Webster notes that similar words for "snail" still exist in Germanic languages like Swedish ("snigel"), Danish ("snegl"), and German ("Schnecke").

Snails do more than inspire fun wordplay. These small composters break down decaying plants and dead fungi, returning nutrients to the soil and helping prairie ecosystems stay healthy.
