Mississippi Kite (Patient 26-0513) came to our raptor clinic with a sibling after being displaced from its nest. This young one gets an examination that includes wings, eyes, legs, talons, and more.

The diet of a Kite is almost exclusively insects. Mice and other small vertebrates are not the mainstay of Kites' diets. Large-bodied insects form the usual bulk of a Kite's diet with grasshoppers and cicadas especially prominent. Beetles, crickets, and dragonflies also are among their varied fare of insects.

This is the Southern Plains Bumble Bee or Bombus Fraternus. As their name suggests they are native to the Southern Plains. It is unfortunately a rare, declining species of bee recognized by its short, velvety hair, a black band across the thorax between the wings, and yellow first and second abdominal segments. Its current population abundance has dropped to less than 15% of historical numbers across the central and eastern United States.

The Southern Plains Bumble Bee eats a wide variety of plant nectar and pollen from native flowers. Some of its favorites are Milkweed, Prairie Clover, and Thistle.

Like other bumble bees, they bypass trees or cavities, choosing instead to nest directly on the ground or in abandoned underground rodent cavities. Which may lead you to wonder why they are called Bumble Bees. Bumble Bees are named after the word "bumble," which means to make a humming, buzzing, or droning sound.
