Look who’s making headlines! Vanessa Young is the high energy force at Lubec Community Outreach Center after school… we love her!

Congratulations to Vanessa Young, this year’s Rising Star! 🌟
Vanessa is proof of the difference afterschool makes, both in a child’s learning and in their life. She meets every child with an open mind and heart, works through challenges with humor and care, and celebrates every win with real enthusiasm.
Her path has included teaching food and nutrition with UMaine Cooperative Extension, leading programming at Roosevelt Camp for over a decade, and bringing fun, hands-on kids’ activities to community events across Washington and Hancock Counties.
Her nominator shared that families and neighbors regularly stop her on the street to say how amazing their program is, and that Vanessa is the heartbeat behind it. She shows up every day, often through school vacations and early release days, and her dedication has helped shift how their small rural community sees the power of afterschool.
Vanessa tends to work behind the scenes and would never seek the spotlight, so we’re happy to shine it on her. As her nominator put it, hearing Vanessa come through the door is like a breath of cool air in a heat wave.
Vanessa, you are a leader in this field, and Maine’s OST community is better because you’re in it. Congratulations!
