Last week in Lubbock, Texas, students held a funeral for academic freedom.

Led by Rise25 Fellow alongside and Raiders Against Censorship, more than 100 students gathered at Texas Tech University to protest the ongoing attacks on higher education, free expression, and inclusive learning spaces.

Complete with a horse-drawn carriage, funeral attire, eulogies, books, and syllabi, the action symbolized what students called the “death by a thousand cuts” to academic freedom in Texas.

But this was more than protest. It was a reminder that young people are paying attention, organizing boldly, and refusing to stay silent while decisions are made about their futures without them.

This is what youth power looks like.
