Sustainable Food Center West Texas

Sustainable Food Center West Texas Increasing access to nutritious food, transforming the local food system. Our work supports local, small to mid-sized farms so they can thrive.

Sustainable Food Center works to transform the food system to nourish our health, land, and livelihood. We envision a just, equitable, and regenerative food system where people and the environment thrive. We also increase access to healthy, local food and offer education and resources to help individuals and families maintain a healthy diet. In West Texas, our food access programs increase access

to farm-fresh, local fruits, and vegetables for individuals and families who use nutrition assistance benefits, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

👏Happy !👏🧑‍🌾Join us in appreciating Roots Booker T. Washington Community Garden and Lubbock Roots Historical Arts Council for their work of honoring the heritage of Black communities year-round.

🪻The Roots Booker T. Washington Community Garden has been serving as a source of more than fresh veggies since its inaugural season in 2013 – the garden provides education, community gathering space, and cultural enrichment through partnership with schools and churches.

🫂 The volunteer-run garden teaches the community to “learn, lead, and live well” by offering youth workshops, storytelling circles, and classes on composting, irrigation, and seed saving!

🥬The community and connections that are born at the garden are a testament to the hard work poured in by volunteers. In return, neighbors and volunteers can rely on the garden to carry ingredients that they regularly use, helping reduce the grocery bill for their families.

🪻Former Lubbock City Council member, Sheila Patterson Harris, describes the garden as being built by the community for the community.“...Groups that come here… they are here, using their blood, sweat and tears, to make this place happen, Harris said” (Via KCBD)🪻

👏Thank you to the volunteers, neighbors, and everyone at the Roots Historical Arts Council that makes this garden possible and lets healing and heritage take root in the Roots Booker T. Washington Community Garden. To get involved and learn more about what’s growing at the garden, visit the website: https://www.lubbockroots.org/booker-t-washington-community-garden---lubbock

🤔Did you know there is farm fresh produce being grown right now in West Texas? Yes - even through the freezing temperatures 🥶

Farmers are hard at work making sure we can choose fresh, local produce, year-round. And that’s not all - they might be saving you money.

🧑‍🌾Choosing produce that is grown locally and seasonally can cost less per pound than out-of-season produce that is transported from another growing region. Local producers that sell to their communities don’t have to transport their produce long distances, so their customers don’t have to front the cost for the vehicles, fuel, and other processing that is required for transporting food long distances.

📍Most of West Texas falls into the USDA Growing Zones 6-8. During cold months, you will find West Texas farmers harvesting produce that could tolerate the multiple days below freezing through the winter, such as…

🥬Kale, collard greens, rainbow and swiss chard, and other leafy greens!
🥕Carrots and other root veggies!
🥦Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and other brassicas!

🛒Climbing grocery prices can’t compete with a little hard work and creativity! Let’s talk about how you can be a conscious meal planner to save some money when you shop for food.

💸What does "cost per serving" mean?

Cost per serving is a measure of how much money you spent on each serving of your meal.

💸How does knowing the cost per serving save me money?

A low cost per serving means that you spend less on each serving, even if you spend the same amount up front. For example, with $30, you could make 4 servings of a meal that costs $7.50 per serving. Or, with the same $30, you could make 15 servings of a meal that costs $2 per serving. The ingredients for both recipes cost $30, but one will make more servings and last longer.

🥬Swipe to the end for directions to prepare 🫘Beans and Greens🫘 from Fresh Seasonal Recipes, the cookbook from our very own The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre. With a cost per serving of $1.34, this low-cost recipe is tasty, filling, and packed with fiber, protein, and veggies! 🥬

Good nutrition is an important school supply. ✏️📚 That’s why Sustainable Food Center (SFC) worked with Lubbock’s South Plains Community Action Association, Inc. Eddie Richardson Headstart and West Texas farmers during the government shutdown to provide bags of farm-fresh produce, eggs, and meat to 140 families of students and staff. Not only did this event provide brain food for the next generation of Texas leaders, it also put money in the pockets of local farmers. That’s a WIN WIN.

In total, SFC provided Lubbock families:
🍎 200 lbs. of apples
🧅100 lbs. of onions
🫑 100 lbs. of peppers
🍅100 lbs. of tomatoes
🥚100 dozen eggs
🥩 200 lb. ground beef

Thanks to Growing Together Texas, Faith2Farm Market Garden, Juicy Lucy's Veggies / Idalou Harvest Co, E3 Farm, Panhandle Meat Processing/Ranchers Store Front, and Murphy Family Farms for providing farm-fresh foods!
