Lewis County Historical Society This is the official page of the Lewis County Historical Society.

As an educational organization, our mission is to preserve, present and promote the history and stories of Lewis County and its environs – including those of the Tug Hill plateau, the Black River valley and the western Adirondacks – and to use our collections, programming and partnerships to be the North Country’s preeminent institution for heritage preservation, education and tourism. The Lewis C

ounty Historical Society seeks to organize community and educational outreach programs, assist with genealogy and local history research, work on numerous preservation projects, and collect and record information on both local families and figures, as well as historic buildings, sites and events. We routinely seek, receive and administer funding through federal, state and local governmental programs, public and private foundation grants, gifts, donations and endowments, and other fundraising efforts, both for the Society’s own historic preservation efforts and operating needs, as well as for the needs of other local history and preservation groups that are either too small or prefer not to have to administer such funding for themselves. We look to acquire real and personal property for the public benefit, assist in placing historic properties on the National Register, and aim not only to be a repository of research and learning dedicated to a deeper understanding of the North Country experience over time, but also to be a respected voice for the importance of preserving our area’s past. Through our collections, archives, properties, writings and publications, exhibits, funding initiatives, and public programs, the Society seeks to nurture a greater appreciation for the history of this area and for the ideas, values, successes and failures that bind us together both as a county and a community. We believe that a sense of history and the need for preservation enables diverse parts of our community to achieve a shared heritage – which is vital to any community’s character – and enhances the overall quality of North County life.

We are accepting raffle donations now. This is very good exposure for your business or organization.

Thousands of visitors come through the Historical Society during our Holiday Festival.

We also have a strong social media presence with daily postings during the Holiday Festival featuring our sponsors and donors.

And, you can help us preserve, protect and present Lewis County's rich history!

"Back to school" in Lewis County.

The first time I could find this printed in a Lewis County paper was October 4th, 1871. And, it was not used as a marketing phrase.

It seemed to begin being used as a sales marketing term in the 1940s.

It's use in marketing increased substantially in the 1990s.

Back to school shopping season is second only to the Christmas/Holiday shopping season in sales.

Tonight! At the Lewis County Historical Society, the Lowville Village Jazz Band will be performing many classic beloved hits like, "Beyond the Sea", "Caravan", and "What a Wonderful World".

Also, "God Bless the USA" in honor of our nation's 250th anniversary.

The music begins at 7 pm and doors open at 6:30 pm.

This is a free community concert thanks to the generosity of the Lowville Village Jazz Band and the hospitality of the Lewis County Historical Society.

Arrive early to visit 250th displays. All displays and events this summer have been supported by the NYS 250th Commemoration Commission.

Donations are happily accepted this evening and anytime to support the LCHS's ongoing efforts to preserve, protect and promote Lewis County and it's environs history.

The Lewis County Historical Society has a large collection of local historical quilts carefully preserved in our collection.

We have been fortunate to receive another addition this past week.

A circa 1914 "log cabin" pattern silk quilt top pieced and hand stitched by Estella Rowell Keeney, Osceola, N.Y. The backing later added in 2014.

Our quilt collection is safely packed away most of the time. This year we will have them out for display during the Holiday Festival "Festival of Christmas Past", November 20, 21,27,28 and December 1-5th.
