In the spring of 2025, the Khmer community and supporters across New England will come together for "Proleung Khmer (K

hmer Soul): A 50-year Journey of Remembrance and Resilience," a series of events commemorating one of the most profound and defining moments in Khmer history. It forced the population into the countryside, leading to nearly four years of terror and trauma, during which 1.7 to 3 million Khmer people died due to overwork, starvation, disease, and ex*****on. 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Khmer refugees relocating to the United States after fleeing the regime. Purpose: This event series aims to honor the lives lost during the Khmer Genocidal Regime of Pol Pot, support survivors, and celebrate the contributions of Khmer Americans. By fostering remembrance and education, "Proleung Khmer" seeks to preserve the Khmer heritage and ensure that future generations understand and remember the sacrifices and achievements of the Khmer Diaspora. Merrimack Repertory Theatre is excited to announce our final production of the season A Khmer Swan Lake. The performance run dates are April 8-26. This beautiful new dance theatre adaptation is brought to life by Angkor Dance Troupe. The performance blends Western ballet with Cambodia's Robam Kenore traditional dance style, bringing the themes of love, betrayal, and sacrifice to life through Cambodian dancers and musicians, creating a spectacle that is at once familiar, and yet also entirely original. A Khmer Swan Lake is not just a performance, it is a cultural bridge, a celebration of Cambodian heritage, and a daring reimagining of a story loved around the world. For Tickets, please visit www.mrt.org or call the Box Office at 978-654-4678.

Hello friends and family, because of the 50th anniversary of the genocide, the interest in sharing history about Cambodia and its people, and due to the current border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, Yale University's Council for Southeast Asian Studies is putting together a year-long learning opportunity in 2026 on the history of Cambodia all the way up to the diasporas. The first session is going to held this Wednesday, January 14th from 12 - 1 pm and they will offer virtual attendance as well as in person. The second session is slated for January 28th with more info to come!

The first session is entitled
"In the Beginning Was Angkor: Heritage and Identity (Part I)" to be presented by Dr. Piphal Heng.

Below is Dr. Heng's bio and you can read more and register here to attend via Zoom:
https://macmillan.yale.edu/southeast-asia/events/2026-01-07/piphal-hengin-beginning-was-angkor-heritage-and-identity-part-i

Dr. Piphal Heng is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Yale University, specializing in Southeast Asian archaeology. His research focuses on urbanism, political economy, and religious transformation in Cambodia, with particular attention to the Angkorian and post-Angkorian periods (9th-18th century CE). Dr. Heng integrates geospatial technologies—including LiDAR, remote sensing, and spatial analysis—with archaeological fieldwork to examine long-term landscape use, settlement patterns, and urban infrastructure. He currently directs the Phum Archaeology project, which explores the social and spatial dynamics of low-density urbanism in the Lower Mekong basin.

We're really looking forward to attending this first session and hope some of you can join too!
