What conserves water, reduces stormwater runoff, and saves you money? A rain barrel, of course! These handy barrels collect rainwater from a roof via a downspout and store it for later use—such as watering your garden or washing your car. With just ¼ inch of rainfall, a 50-60 gallon barrel fills right up! If you live in Suffolk or Nassau County, NY, check out the Long Island Garden Rewards Program—eligible homeowners can get reimbursed for installing a rain barrel. Did you know that the Friday before Memorial Day weekend each year is observed as Long Island Sound Day? The occasion recognizes the environmental, recreational, and economic importance of the Sound right before the unofficial start of summer begins.

NEIWPCC assists the Long Island Sound Partnership with implementing a management plan for the Sound that includes research, monitoring, public education, and outreach. One aspect of this work is the Nutrient Bioextraction Initiative, which was created to determine if the growing and harvesting of shellfish and seaweed can be used to make meaningful reductions in nitrogen levels in the Sound.
