The Barn For Equine Learning

The Barn For Equine Learning The Barn for Equine Learning is a non-profit organization that strives to connect people and horses to bring about positive change.

The Barn for Equine Learning provides equine-assisted therapy that fosters healing, growth, and transformation—where horses and humans work together to change lives. The founders of The Barn have always believed in the healing and teaching power of horses, and it has long been our dream to share that power with others. Set back on a wooded 40 acres in Lowell, MI, The Barn is home to horses, goats,

chickens, cats and dogs. Removed from the sounds and business of life The Barn is a peaceful sanctuary, offering a learning environment that makes it easy to stay present and in the moment. Like many of the people who visit The Barn, it has been a place that has undergone much growth and positive change. The Barn began without even a barn, but with big dreams. The first participants at The Barn met in a grassy field, using the trailer as a hitching post and the trails as our arena. But The Barn has come a long way. We now have a beautiful 12 stall barn and large riding arena. Our herd has also grown and we now have 12 wonderful horses of all sizes, colors and personalities. We have horse that are wonderful at beginning lessons as well as those who do more advanced riding. Our horses also love to spend time with the students in our Equine Assisted Learning program which follows the EAGALA model (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association). As we see our dreams come to reality around us at The Barn we can only look forward to where they will take us next. The Barn team has two Masters level Social Workers who are also EAGALA certified. EAGALA is a well-developed research-based equine therapy model. It utilizes a team approach which means that every session is facilitated by an equine specialist and a mental health specialist. For more information about EAGALA, you can visit their website at www.eagala.org. The Barn has gotten to where it is today because of the support of many wonderful individuals and the community at large. If you would like to become involved with The Barn, check out our programs and see if there is one that would interest you. We are also a non-profit organization that strives to offer our programs at as low a cost as possible, which means that your donations mean a lot to us and our herd. Calling Local Work Groups & Teams!

Our annual Boots & Bling Gala is almost here, and we could use some extra hands getting The Barn ready! ✨

We’re looking for businesses, work teams, clubs, or groups willing to come out for a few hours to help with cleaning, organizing, and sprucing up the property before September 12.

It’s a fun way to get out of the office, give back together, and help us prepare for our biggest fundraiser of the year. 💛

Interested? Send us a message or email [email protected] and we’ll find a time that works for your group!

Because everyone deserves a safe place to belong. 🐴💛

Sometimes finding the right place can change everything. ❤️🐴

Here’s another story from one of our volunteers, Lisa, about what brought her to the Barn — and why this place has come to mean so much to her. ❤️🐴

After moving back to West Michigan from Colorado, Lisa was grieving the loss of her beloved Arabian — a rescue who came into her life at age 50 and began a short but powerful journey with horses.

A few months later, she realized how much she missed being around them and found her way to the Barn.

Lisa says she has a special place in her heart for the “old guys,” especially Teddy, and loves spending time caring for the minis.

“The Barn fills me up every time I’m there. Thank you for being a safe and loving place for horses and people.”

That’s exactly what we hope to be.

Mental health, grief, loneliness, and anxiety affect people of every age. Through horses, therapy, community, and connection, we’re working to be part of the solution.

🎉 Happy 17th Birthday, Katty! 🐴💕

We’re so lucky to have Katty as part of our Barn family. She is truly one of the sweetest people, always ready with a smile, a good laugh, and a helping hand.

Katty knows her way around horses, works hard, and is always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed to help keep the Barn running and the horses happy. ❤️

As she heads into her senior year, we’re so excited to see what’s ahead for her — especially with her growing interest in veterinary medicine.

Katty, we hope 17 is full of horses, laughter, big dreams, and all the things you love most.

We’re so happy you’re ours. 🥰🎂🐴

Today, we’re sharing a personal story from Bri, our Programs & Community Engagement Manager, about how she and her daughter found the Barn — and how what started as a simple horse camp became something much bigger. ❤️🐴

“As a kid, I fell in love with horses in Montana and dreamed of having one of my own.

Years later, I watched my daughter have her own Montana moment. She fed the horses every day, wrote them a goodbye note, and cried when it was time to leave.

I promised her we would find a place back home where she could be around horses.

So I signed her up for summer camp at the Barn for Equine Learning.

I thought I was signing her up for horse camp.

I had no idea I was walking both of us into something that would change our lives.

The Barn gave my daughter confidence, belonging, and a place to work through hard things.

And somewhere along the way, it became that place for me too.

Now she rides. I ride. I work here. And horses have become part of our everyday lives in a way I never could have imagined.

That’s why our Boots & Bling Gala means so much to me.

The Barn is more than lessons or therapy. It is connection, confidence, community, and growth. It becomes the place you never knew you needed.’

Boots & Bling helps make stories like Bri’s possible. ❤️

Today, our Barn family is remembering Carolyn Fellmer, who passed away after a courageous journey with Early Onset Alzheimer’s. 🤍

Horses had been part of Carolyn’s heart since she was young, and thanks to the incredible love and devotion of her husband, Mike, they remained part of her life throughout her journey.

We had the privilege of seeing what happened when Carolyn was with a horse. Even as Alzheimer’s progressed, in the saddle she was confident, joyful, connected—and simply Carolyn. 🐴

Those moments are a beautiful reminder of why we believe so deeply in the healing connection between horses and people.

We are incredibly honored that Carolyn’s family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Barn for Equine Learning, a place where Carolyn found comfort, connection, and joy through her love of horses.

Gifts made in Carolyn’s memory will help us continue creating those meaningful connections for others.

Our hearts are with Mike, Carolyn’s family, and everyone who loved her.

For those wishing to make a memorial gift in Carolyn’s honor, please follow the donation link below.
