Chicago Firefighter Mike Altman fell through the floor into a fully involved room.

On Monday afternoon, Christian County Deputy Sheriff Gabriel Ramirez initiated a traffic stop on State Highway 160 near Highlandville, Missouri. The driver of the vehicle he pulled over was a convicted felon who just bonded out of jail days before. During the encounter, the male gunned down Deputy Ramirez. Responding deputies found Gabriel lying in the roadway suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The suspect fled the scene, which sparked a 9-hour statewide manhunt.

Later that evening, law enforcement officers spotted the gunman’s abandoned truck near Reeds Spring and tracked him into a wooded area. As they approached, he fired on them with a rifle. Two deputies, Josh Wahl from Christian County and Austin McCall from Webster County, were both wounded. Christian County Deputy Michael Hislope was among the group of officers who attempted to rescue the wounded deputies when he was shot and killed by the gunman. The suspect was eventually killed after exchanging gunfire with several responding officers.

30-year old Gabriel Ramirez joined the CCSO in March of last year, and leaves behind a wife and two young sons.

40-year-old Michael Hislope served the CCSO since October 2019, and previously worked as a police officer with the North County Police Cooperative.

Both deputies were graduates of Ozark High School and went on to proudly serve their country in the U.S. Army. A joint funeral service for Gabriel and Michael will be held tomorrow.
