Monroe County Conservation is located in south central Iowa, and is home to the Lake Miami Recreation Area. Collectively, the Monroe CCB manages the Lake Miami Area, Monroe County Sports Complex, and Gladson Carmack Park - totaling in excess of 900 acres within the county. Lake Miami also offers camping, overnight cabins, wildlife exhibit, playground, open and enclosed shelters and much more! For

Velvet is coming off! 🦌

Our bull elk is shedding the velvet from his antlers! Velvet is a living, blood-rich tissue that helps antlers grow incredibly fast. Once the antlers finish growing, the velvet dries up and the bull rubs it off—revealing the hard, fully developed antlers underneath.

Road is Open! It looks a little different out here! The projects goal was to stop rainwater from washing out the road. Secondary roads did an excellent job. Today was a good test! There’s some standing water but it’s not everyday we get rain like we did today!

Exciting update for Lake Miami!!!!
The elk herd has grown!

Recently Dawn Eggert and her family generously donated an herd of 5 elk to Lake Miami Park in memory of her late husband, Jeff. Their incredible gift has strengthened the health and future of our herd, and we are so grateful for their generosity.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough… this morning we discovered a surprise! One of the donated cows was pregnant, and we now have a brand-new elk calf.

If you stop by the elk enclosure over the next few weeks, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of our newest little addition. ❤️

Note: Please do not feed the elk and be respectful and kind to them.
