Make Your Voice Heard. Protect Medicaid.
Medicaid helps millions of people living with mental health conditions access the care they need. New proposed rules could make it much harder to keep that coverage.
Here's what's at stake:
• People with serious mental health conditions may have to prove they can't work to qualify for an exemption, even though the law only says they must be medically frail. This creates a new hurdle for people already navigating complex mental health challenges.
• Time isn't on their side. Someone could only self-identify as medically frail once during an eligibility period. After that, they may have only a short window to find a Medicaid provider, get an appointment, receive an evaluation, and gather the documentation needed to keep their coverage. In many communities, that's simply not realistic.
• People experiencing homelessness wouldn't automatically be exempt from the work requirement. We know mental illness and homelessness are deeply connected, and adding more administrative barriers could make it even harder for people to access treatment, find stability, and secure housing.
Mental health recovery isn't one-size-fits-all, and neither should Medicaid eligibility.
