Showing off one of our Glitchwerks cameras! Diego Treto Diego_treto and Patrick Taylor Patrick taylor of Glichwerks donated 2 of the cameras they made during their toolmaker residency in Colorado by hacking color SD security cameras. Now we have a large enough studio space to keep them readily available. Images are through the camera, a few with an oscillator in the CV (Control Voltage) inputs, but no other image processors are involved.

Announcing our newest Signal Culture Modular App: Actual Images! Actual Images is a four channel sequencer that can switch between videos using low frequency up to video-rate oscillators. It also features an optical flow engine with a fluid simulation keying system that dissolves the edges of movement and contrast! This app is also included in Modular Apps Bundle 2, along with Weaver, PROC-AMP, Re:Struktr, PXLMSH, SC Input Amplifier, and SC Syphon/Spout Recorder. This week we were joined by Brig Bogue. Brig is an interdisciplinary artist and musician based in Western New York. His current body of work explores q***r representation under the Hays Code and beyond through mediums of video, print, textiles, and photo. Brig is the Residency Coordinator and Technical Assistant at the Institute for Electronic Arts.

Brig has been a collaborating printer for artists including Ericka Walker, Althea Murphy-Price, and Janet Ballweg, creating prints published by ieaEditions.

His work has been exhibited nationally, including at the Cohen Gallery (Alfred, NY), Textile Center (Minneapolis, MN), and PAPA Projects (Minneapolis, MN). His graphic design work has been commissioned by musicians such as Martin Chiesl, KARL SORO, CHOOSE YR WEAPON, Janet Earth, Weird Adults, and Twin Riverz.

As a violinist, Brig has collaborated with Emmy winning audio engineer Ryan Michael Shaw, Elisha Phil, Anthony Hawkins (Sad Planet), and Orca Welles. He has also performed with ensembles such as the Riverside Chamber Symphony of Eugene, OR, the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Spiazzo Piano Trio.

We have an amazing new version of Interstream, the Signal Culture Modular App that does datamoshing in real time. Interstream version 2.0 is an enormous update with the ability to bloom, crossfade hack, fluid mosh, directional mosh, simultaneous mosh, and mosh at multiple resolutions up to 4k live and in real time. This update is now native on Apple Silicon Macs and is also working great on Windows machines! If you already have the Modular App version of Interstream, you should automatically receive the update link from DPD. A tutorial is already up on our Vimeo. Thank you, Jason Bernagozzi, for volunteering your time to design these incredible tools. ❤️

Thanks to Kelly Sears for coming out all the way from Colorado to help us test drive the new studio! She’s been working on material for an upcoming feature length film tentatively titled “The Undercurrent“ that that weaves together personal documents an archives into a science fiction, ghost story autobiography.

Kelly Sears is a filmmaker whose short films reconfigure archival materials into speculative narratives that interrogate our social and political histories. Her short films have been screened at festivals such as Sundance, Slamdance, South by Southwest, American Film Institute, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and museums such as MoMA, The Hammer Museum, and the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. Solo programs of her films have screened at the Pacific Film Archives, Anthology Film Archives, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the San Francisco Cinematheque. Her films have won awards at festivals such as Slamdance, Ann Arbor, Black Maria, Chicago Underground, and Oak Cliff, among others. She is an Associate Professor in the Cinema Studies and Moving Image Arts Department at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she also serves as the Director of the Brakhage Center for Media Arts.

Thank you alum Kevin Kripper for sending beautiful artwork! We’re very excited and thinking about where we’ll be hanging these for future residents (and us) to enjoy! They were drawn with a pen plotter controlled via software he designed in Max/MSP. Kevin is the creator of Vsynth and has been at Signal Culture in both Artist and Toolmaker residencies.
