46 years ago today, June 20, 1980, The Blues Brothers premiered.

The Blues Brothers is a 1980 American musical comedy film directed by John Landis. It stars John Belushi as “Joliet” Jake Blues and Dan Aykroyd as Elwood Blues, characters developed from the recurring musical sketch on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. The screenplay was written by Aykroyd and Landis, and the film is set and filmed in and around Chicago, Illinois.

The story follows two brothers on “a mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage where they were raised by reuniting their R&B band to raise $5,000. Along the way, they are pursued by police and targeted by a series of adversaries while encountering major musical performances.

The film features performances by James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, and John Lee Ho**er, along with supporting roles from Carrie Fisher, Henry Gibson, Charles Napier, Kathleen Freeman, and John Candy.

Despite early production difficulties and budget overruns, the film became a major box office success, grossing over $115 million worldwide and later achieving cult status. It was selected in 2020 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
