Happy Pride!

Pride is much more than a celebration, it's the story of LGBTQI+ communities coming together to protect, uplift, and resist. It’s a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality.

More than anything, we hope you feel like you belong here. That you feel free to be yourself and be respected for it.

Love is love.

What happened to this tree?

We’re testing a new way to kill invasive Callery pears at Grailville, and we’re girdling them to take them out.

They’ve spread rapidly through some of our old farm fields and smothered native plants until they’re all that’s left.

By stripping a ring of bark all the way round the tree, we cut off its nutrient and energy flow and will slowly starve the tree.

Most people apply herbicide to that cut, but we’re trying a chemical-free approach. Without the herbicide, we expect each tree to send up sprouts from the ground. Our Crew and volunteers will keep cutting them back until the trees run out of steam!

Follow along to see if our experiment works!

A rare bird is hiding just outside our door and everyone wants to find it.

Yesterday, excited visitors kept showing up at our Grailville office searching for something special: the elusive Connecticut Warbler.

Someone heard it singing its ringing chippy-chipper-chippy-chipper-chippy-chipper-chip song but no one we talked with had gotten a glimpse.

That’s the Connecticut Warblers for you. They are a rare find in our area and pass though around late May during their migration north. They’re hard to spot because they spend much of their time foraging low to the ground in dense underbrush and thickets.

It and our other migrating birds won’t be here for long.

Want to take a look? Our trails at Grailville, just outside of Loveland, are open daily. Come for the birds (we’ve heard a lot more migrants!) and stay for a peaceful walk.

Meet Mandie Kender and Grace Kender. They are a mother/daughter duo who will be speaking on "Compassionate communication" at our Women Working for Peace event next Saturday at Grailville. We can’t wait to hear their perspective!

They have partnered together to teach and share how to practice Compassionate Communication, grounded in the Nonviolent Communication (NVC) framework by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD. In this workshop, they will break down the four core parts of NVC and share how they use it at home and in their community. They will share practical tools to help you start reflecting, communicating more clearly with yourself, and authentically connecting better with others. You will walk away with some things you can try right away and a list of resources to use as you practice.

We nearly stepped on a Wild Turkey nest while pulling garlic mustard at our last volunteer day! She was so well hidden that we all jumped when she burst out of the underbrush and flew away.

Don't worry, we left the area quickly and she'd returned to the nest a couple hours later.

Overall, it was a beautiful, sunny day to spend in the peaceful woods and we saw tons of green caterpillars, a toad, and aniseroot in bloom too.

The most stunning part? This entire area was choked with invasive honeysuckle just last year. This is what restoration looks like.

Join us next Saturday (May 16) just outside of Loveland, OH to keep the work going. Every pair of hands helps heal the land!
