In recent episode of the Foster Friendly Podcast, we were honored to hear from Tristan Smith, a former foster youth, U.S. Army veteran, author, and advocate.
Tristan’s story is one of resilience. After losing his mother at age seven, he spent a decade in foster care, navigating nearly 30 foster homes and 13 different schools before aging out at 18. Today, he’s using his experiences to help others better understand the lasting impact of foster care.
Kids need more than a place to stay. They need someone who listens, believes in their potential, and keeps showing up, even when building trust is difficult.
Because sometimes, behavior is a child’s way of telling us something deeper. And every young person deserves safe, consistent adults who won’t give up on them.

In this episode of the Foster Friendly Podcast, we’re continuing our Aging Out Series with the second episode featuring Sofia Pantoja, a former foster youth, foster care advocate, and social work student.
Sofia spent 11 years in foster care and aged out at 21. She joined us to share her story, the challenges she faced, and what she wishes foster parents understood about young people in care.
After everything she experienced, Sofia says there are two things every young person in foster care really needs: love and stability.
Because sometimes, what a young person needs most is simply to know that someone cares about their well-being, believes in them, and wants to see them become the best version of themselves.
