Where do kids go when they leave foster care? đź’

In 2025, more than 169,000 youth exited foster care. Their next steps looked different:

👉 46% were reunified with their families
👉 26% were adopted
👉 10% exited to guardianship

But for 15,030 youth, foster care ended without permanency. They aged out without the lasting family connection every young person deserves.

As we recognize Reunification Month, we’re reminded that the first goal of foster care is to help families safely reunite whenever possible. And when reunification isn’t possible, children deserve permanency through adoption or guardianship.

At America’s Kids Belong, our I Belong Project helps connect adoption-eligible youth with families ready to step forward. Learn more through the link in our bio. 🔗

“One of the greatest joys as a foster dad is seeing families reunited. Watching them get a second chance and thrive doesn’t get much better than that—even though it’s hard when children leave.” 💙

Reunification is the goal. And yes, it’s hard. But it’s also beautiful, redemptive, and worth it.

In this moment from Episode 94, Paula Yost shares about her daughter, whom she met through foster care when she was 14 years old.

Her story is a reminder that kids in foster care are not defined by their hardest behaviors, their trauma or the circumstances that brought them into care. With advocacy, consistency, and unconditional love, their futures can look full of hope. đź’™

June is Reunification Month, a time to highlight one of the most powerful outcomes in the foster care journey: a family being made whole again.

Reunification is when children in foster care are safely reunited with their biological families. We believe in strengthening families and systems.

This month, we honor the parents, caseworkers, and communities who make reunification possible. 🙌💙

There are approximately 300,000 churches in the U.S. and approximately 330,000 youth in foster care.

If just two families from each church fostered, there would be more than enough homes for youth in care. ⛪️

Even if you can't foster, there are so many ways to support our mission to help kids in care find homes and get the support they need. Visit our website or scroll our page to learn more! đź’™

Did you know?
There are currently 3,590 kids in foster care in Colorado.
We need more foster parents in Colorado and more support for those families so that kids can find healing and stability while in out of home placements.
