Today is no longer a day to celebrate a man who got lost crossing the ocean and found himself in what is now the Bahamas over 500 years ago. Today, we honor the Indigenous People of this land – stretching from the northern-est regions of Canada down to Chile’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago. For thousands of years they have shown resilience in their safeguarding of sacred traditions, languages, and heritage.

Despite hundreds of years of displacement, persecution and genocide, they persist. Though the days of “kill the Indian, save the man” are long past, the damaging effects continue. The reminders of that sentiment abound. Take a look at the $20 and be reminded of the man responsible for some of the most egregiously violent actions taken against the Native People of this land. Mount Rushmore, the Trail of Tears – they’re all reminders of the evil done against Native People.

YET – Indigenous (Native) People and their stories continue every day. Their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the earth, water, air - is an ingrained part of their way of life. Their celebrations, traditions, their art, language, story-telling – it’s all endured. We honor them today. We celebrate the fact that they are here. They continue. The beauty of their traditions and heritage continues.

We're a little late but better late than never! October 1st is Chingona Day - we believe Every Day is the perfect day to be a Chingona! A Chingona is someone who stands up, speaks out, works diligently to improve her community - to raise up the voices around her and to Never back down or ever allow her voice to be silenced. She displays wisdom, discretion and commitment to finding her way through the challenges before her. When necessary, she will take a step back, reassess and move forward once again - persevering to achieve her goals. Here's to all the Chingonas out there doing their part to improve their communities and families.

We've had a couple of spots open up for our 10th Annual Día de los Mu***os Mini Mercado! Spaces are limited and we do our best to avoid duplications. If you or someone you know is looking for a local opportunity, please email [email protected]. She is the only person managing the vendor sign up. She will email a link to our sign up from her Heart and Sol email account. Our form lists multiple options for payment, but we'll send an invoice from our square account directly to you. In light of the imposter trying to scam vendors, we're taking extra precautions.

Our event takes place Saturday, November 7th from 1pm - 4pm. The Mini Mercado is set up in the main ballroom, so you'll have a clear view of the performances.
The booth fee is $50.

We currently are not accepting the following because these spots are filled:

Mark your calendars and tell your friends - join us Saturday, November 7th from 1pm to 4pm for our 10th Annual Día de los Mu***os celebration at the Pulliam Community Building! The celebration will include traditional elements intended to honor and remember our ancestors and loved ones who have passed.

We encourage you to dress up in celebration of Día de los Mu***os. There will be a memorial area for everyone to add the names of their dearly departed.

This is a free, family-friendly event featuring live music, dance, food and more. Artisans in our mini-mercado (market) will have their hand-crafted items available for sale. Our Children's area will include face painters and sugar skull decorating The Loveland Museum will guide children in creating craft projects focused on the four elements - Air, Earth, Fire and Water. In addition to all of that, the Loveland Public Library will have a table where they will give out a free book and tote bag (while supplies last).

It's been brought to our attention that a fake account has been posing as the event coordinator for our upcoming Día de los Mu***os celebration. NOT COOL! This scammer uses a misspelled Spanish last name and when searched for, many warnings about the scam, are found. Our vendor solicitation will always come from our social media account or a Heart and Sol email address. There are times when a board member will meet a vendor and let them know of an upcoming event – but we will ALWAYS refer to our social media accounts or to a Heart and Sol email address. We will not use our personal gmail, yahoo, etc. accounts to correspond with any vendor.

If you are contacted by an event organizer or you see a call for vendors, always verify with the organization in charge of an event before signing up and paying a booth fee. Check out their website or social media accounts. Verify the details – contact name, dates, locations, times, etc. Be careful out there!

Mark your calendars and break out your orange shirts! Wednesday, September 30th is Orange Shirt Day. It's a day to honor the Indigenous children who grew up and survived residential schools. It's also a day to remember the children who never returned home - who did not survive. These American Indian boarding schools forced assimilation and abandonment of their culture, beliefs and heritage.

Children were removed from their families - their communities - their culture. They were forced to take on new names and learn a new language - English. They were made to forget all that they knew. Many did not survive. It's only been recently that mass graves have been found primarily in Canada. However, it is estimated that tens of thousands of children died and were unaccounted for here in the United States.

"Kill the Indian, Save the Man" was the mantra here. These schools and their forced assimilation ran for 150 years. Colorado had nine of these schools. It isn't so far removed from you.

Every Child Matters. Show your solidarity September 30th. Wear and orange shirt in honor of the lives lost and the lives that survived.

Latiné - Hispanic Heritage Month began this past Tuesday, September 15th and will run through to October 15th. We're special in that we cross over between two months. 😁 There IS a method to the madness which started back in 1968. Under the administration of President Lyndon B Johnson, a week was designated as Hispanic Heritage Week. 20 years later, in 1988, under the administration of President Ronald Reagan it was expanded to a full month.

The time frame was set to capture the Independence Days for many of the countries which make up North, Central and South America. September 15th is the Independence day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. September 16th is Mexican Independence Day and September 18th is Independence day for the nation of Chile. Every one of these nations fought and declared independence from European/Spanish rule.

So why extend this into October? It was designed to include October 12th (formerly known as Columbus Day), also known as Día de la Raza. Originally this was intended to celebrate the fusion of European and Indigenous people/cultures; however, it has now become a time to honor the resilience, strength of spirit and tenacity of Indigenous Resistance and Endurance.

Fun fact, in the United States, over 70 million people identify as Hispanic/Latiné. This equates to a little over 21% of the population. But here’s the underlying and crucial key to this – they are descendants not only of colonizers, but also of the Indigenous People of this continent. This is something that is oftentimes forgotten or ignored. Hispanic/Latiné people are Of This Land and They Belong Here.

This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme is “Together, We Are More,” and we could not believe, stress or support this more. Now is the time to show your support for your Hispanic/ Latiné family, friends, neighbors and community. Now, more than ever...
