Rumberg Family Scholarship

The 2025 Rumberg Family Scholarship was awarded to Chloe Telgkamp.

Chloe is a student in a Doctor of Occupational Therapy program and her academic goals center on neurorehabilitation, assistive technology and research. She plans to focus her research on individuals with ALS, exploring rehabilitation and adaptive interventions that enhance independence and quality of life. Chloe’s choice to pursue a career in OT was deeply impacted by her interactions with her sister, Sam, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. Chloe wrote in her scholarship application: “ALS has changed every aspect of our family’s life, but it has also revealed our resilience, closeness, and ability to find the light even in the darkest moments.”

We love hearing how our volunteers make a difference! Cathy, one of our ALS community members, recently received a beautiful haircut from Emily, through our Pals for pALS Home Haircut program. Emily is a talented hairdresser who generously donates her time and skills to Pals for pALS.

Here’s what Cathy had to say:

"Thank you so much for the amazing haircut! I now recognize the person in the mirror. And it has uplifted my spirits so much. I appreciate your kindness, your talent, and your sparkling personality. Pals for pALS is a great blessing." – Cathy Waller

Emily, your generosity and heart are helping our friends feel more like themselves again, and that’s a gift beyond measure.

Meet Hallie – Pals for pALS Board Member Spotlight!

Say hello to Hallie! A dedicated attorney, loyal friend, and longtime supporter of the ALS community. Hallie’s journey with Pals for pALS started through a friendship with Orly, which began at her very first job out of law school. From backyard cookouts to sand volleyball games (yep, she and Steve were teammates!), Hallie has been part of this story from the beginning.

When Orly asked her to join the board, Hallie didn’t hesitate. “It’s a great cause,” she said—and we couldn’t agree more.

One thing she wishes more people knew? Just how many people in our area are living with ALS. The impact is greater than many realize, and raising awareness is a powerful first step.

Outside of work and volunteering, Hallie loves hitting the golf course, diving into a good book, exploring the outdoors, and catching a theatre show or two.
Fun Fact: Hallie grew up without a TV!

Help us give Hallie a warm welcome in the comments!

Meet Board Member Mark!

Mark joined the Pals for pALS board after connecting with Steve and Orly Rumberg—fellow members of the “Weiner Wednesday” crew at Normandy Swim & Tennis Club, where friendships are built over grilled hot dogs and potluck dinners. When a spot opened up on the board, Mark felt called to step in and give back.

To him, Pals for pALS is all about making a positive difference.

“There’s a great opportunity to pay it forward with help and kindness. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

He hopes more people become aware of ALS and the real-life challenges families face—and also how even a small gesture of help can go a long way in improving their quality of life.

In his free time, you’ll find Mark golfing, riding his bike, traveling with his wife, skiing, watching his kids and grandkids in sports, and puttering around the house.

Fun Fact: He’s also a lifelong CPR instructor who’s taught thousands of students since 1979—how cool is that?

We’re lucky to have Mark on the Pals for pALS team.
