When your spouse says "I want a divorce," it's no April Fool's joke. That moment can feel surreal—like surely they can't be serious. But when they are, how you respond matters.

If you're facing this conversation:
• Take a deep breath and really listen without interrupting
• Acknowledge their feelings (even if you don't agree)
• Control intense emotional reactions if possible
• Ask thoughtful questions about their concerns
• Request time to process if you feel overwhelmed
• Consider suggesting professional help to navigate discussions

Remember, this difficult conversation is just the beginning of a process. You deserve support during this time. Our workshops provide guidance on these crucial early conversations and all the steps that follow.

💭 "Do I have to split my inheritance in the divorce?"

This is one of our most common questions, so let's break it down!

Here's the general rule: Inheritances are usually considered separate property - meaning they belong to just you, not your marriage - IF:

✨ The inheritance was left specifically to you
✨ You kept it separate from joint accounts/property
✨ You didn't use it to benefit the marriage

But watch out! You might "commingle" your inheritance if you:
❌ Put inherited money in a joint account
❌ Use inherited money to renovate your shared home
❌ Add your spouse's name to inherited property
❌ Use inherited funds to pay joint debts

The bottom line? Keep inherited assets separate if you want them to stay yours alone. Not sure about your situation? This is definitely something to discuss with your divorce attorney! 💪

Pro tip: Document when and how you received your inheritance. Those records could be important later!

Want to hear a crazy fact? 78% of women with a college degree have a marriage that lasts at least 20 years. 👩‍🎓Does that mean college somehow confers marital bliss? Let's look beyond the stat. Women who go to college tend to earn higher incomes, marry later in life, and are more likely to marry a fellow college grad, which provides even more economic stability. All those factors tend to lead to longer-lasting marriages.

Mental load, also commonly called “invisible work,” is the cognitive and emotional burden that individuals carry in managing and organizing life. In many relationships, women carry the majority of the mental load. They make the doctor’s appointments for the kids, do a majority of the housework, cook the meals, and send out the birthday cards.

Sound familiar?

Relationships often suffer when one partner doesn’t recognize or effectively share the mental load with their spouse. While discrepancies in mental load may not cause a divorce, it can easily be a contributing factor.
