Our Honorable Specialist Christopher Murphy was a CBRN Recon, (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear). which means he would go in those big Strykers and make sure AO, (Area of Operations) and FOBs, (Forward Operating Base) were safe from CBRN related issues. CBRN reconnaissance forces are able to detect and counter the most dangerous Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear. It refers to the specialized branch, equipment, and defense measures used to protect against weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and hazardous materials. He was LIMA 6 specialized which Operates the NBCRV Stryker: (photos in comments) The core job of an L6 specialist revolves around the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicle (NBCRV). This is a specialized, heavily modified Stryker armored vehicle packed with sensors, standalone air filtration systems, and a rear spectrometer used to detect chemical agents or radiation without the crew having to step outside. Mounted Reconnaissance, they scout ahead of Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) to search for, trace, and mark areas contaminated by chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons. No-Contact Sampling: Using advanced systems integrated into the hull—such as robotic sampling arms and remote sensors. They can sample and analyze liquid, solid, or v***r threats while remaining completely sealed inside the vehicle's safe "over-pressure" environment.
Specialist Christopher Murphy was also hazmat tech credited. Army Hazmat Techs are typically assigned to specialized units, such as Technical Es**rt Companies or CBRN Enhanced Response Force Packages (CERFP). Their primary duties include: Offensive Mitigation: Entering the "Hot Zone" to plug leaks, patch ruptured valves on chemical tanks, or upright damaged hazardous containers. Unknown Identification utilizing advanced spectroscopy equipment (like Fourier-transform infrared or Raman spectroscopy) to identify unknown liquids, powders, or gases. Confined Space Entry executing search, rescue, and sampling operations inside toxic environments, industrial facilities, and clandestine laboratories. Mass Decontamination: Setting up and running technical decontamination corridors for both responding personnel and civilian casualties during a domestic disaster. He has been to Korea for a rotation and he has been to the National training Center which is a prep for deployment.
The reason he joined the US ARMY was because of September 11, 2001. He remembers it like it was yesterday, he was in 5th grade and they all got pulled into the hallway and made to shelter in place. When they got to go home, he was glued to the tv for a week, to the point his mom had to shut the TV off. It was from that moment forward he knew his goal in life was to join the military and do what he could to protect the country. He knew he had to do and be something bigger than himself.
