“Don’t Just Ask to Join — Ask to Help”

Not every Veteran is ready to commit to membership on the spot — and that’s okay. But many are more than willing to help. And that’s where the conversation starts.

This week’s focus:
If you know a qualified Veteran, instead of jumping straight to "Will you join?", try:

“Hey, we’ve got a service project coming up. Want to help out?”

✅ Lend a hand at a Post cleanup
✅ Volunteer for a community event
✅ Help with logistics at the next fundraiser

Why it works:
Once they meet your members, see your impact, and feel the camaraderie — joining becomes a natural next step.

Some of our best members started by just showing up to help.

“You Don’t Need a Table to Recruit”

Sure, booths and banners are great — but some of the best recruiting conversations happen without any setup at all.

Think about where you already go:
Coffee shops
Barbershops
Ballgames
Church
The local bait shop
Every one of these places is a chance to say:

“Hey, did you ever deploy overseas? You might be eligible to join the VFW.”

📱 Tip of the Week:
Keep a couple of printed applications or a screenshot of the VFW Join Page or download the app QR code on your phone. It’s not about the hard sell — it’s about starting a conversation.

You don’t need a table. You just need to ask.

The VFW Department of Kentucky is proud to celebrate the incredible membership growth happening across our Posts.

Already Over 101% – Congratulations to these Posts that have already surpassed the national membership standard:

Let’s keep pushing hard and hit that 101% Department standard together. Every member counts, every voice matters, and every Veteran deserves a place in the VFW!

As the 2025-2026 membership year gets underway, we have a new set of Commander's Challenges to help drive membership. Like last year's challenges, these will focus on recruiting new members and converting existing Annual members to Life members. However, this year the challenges will be quarterly instead of monthly.
The first challenge will run from July 1st through September 30th, and each Post that leads their membership division at the end of the challenge will receive a 10' canopy tent, perfect for use at your recruiting events!
You can check your Post's progress through the Online Membership System (OMS) using the Commander's Challenge link.
The challenge has been set - will you accept it?

☕ Coffee & Camaraderie

Sometimes, the best recruiting isn’t done behind a table — it’s done across one.

This week’s idea: Host a "Coffee & Camaraderie" hour.
📍 No speeches.
📍 No agenda.
📍 Just Veterans. Coffee. And conversation.

Invite current members to bring a friend. Invite non-members who served.
Let them feel the community before they commit to it.

Tip:
Hold it at your Post, a local diner, or a coffee shop that supports Veterans. Print out a few VFW applications and set them on the table — no pressure.

Some of the best VFW members joined not because of a flyer...
…but because someone bought them a cup of coffee and said:

“You belong here.”

🤝 “Your Auxiliary Isn’t Just Support — They’re Your Recruiting Partner”

Commanders — if you're looking to grow your Post this year, don’t go it alone. Your Auxiliary members are already out in the community:
🏥 Hospitals
🏫 Schools
💼 Workplaces
🛍️ Everyday life

They know who served. They hear the stories. And they can help us reach eligible Veterans who haven’t joined — yet.

📣 This week’s call to action:

Ask your Auxiliary members:

“If you know someone who served overseas and isn’t a VFW member yet — help us reach out.”

✅ We’ll check eligibility
✅ Walk them through the app
✅ And give them a proper VFW welcome

💡 Want to sweeten the deal?
Consider a Post-level incentive:

“If the Auxiliary helps bring in 10 new VFW members this year, we’ll donate $200 to one of their projects or causes.”

This isn’t about buying members — it’s about building a shared mission.

🎯 “Go Where the Veterans Already Are”

Not every recruit walks through the doors of a Post. Sometimes, you’ve got to meet them in the wild — at county fairs, car shows, football games, and back-to-school nights.

📋 Here’s How to Expand Your Reach:

✅ Partner with community events to set up a small VFW table or booth.
✅ Bring a banner, brochures, QR code to vfw.org/join, and a couple of passionate members.
✅ Don’t wait for them to come to you — walk the crowd, shake hands, and start conversations.

🧠 Tip of the Week:
Ask your city or county for a list of upcoming public events through the parks & rec department or Chamber of Commerce — then get on the calendar.
Get outside the walls. Show your community that the VFW isn’t just a building — it’s a mission.

With three different levels of membership available within the VFW, your commitment to joining our organization means that you are committed to serving your fellow service members and veterans for generations to come.

"Don’t Let Lapsed Members Slip Away"

The new VFW year is officially underway — and while every member’s service always counts, renewals processed after July 1 help your Post meet this year’s 101% membership goal.

Now’s the time to reconnect with unpaid or lapsed members and start the year strong.

Run your Post’s unpaid list in OMS.

Consider running a renewal special — $5 or $10 off dues for members who renew this month. A small gesture can go a long way in bringing someone back.

Too many Posts wait for a membership drive to ask someone to join. The truth is: every event is a recruiting opportunity.

✅ Post breakfast? Have applications at every table.
✅ Bingo night? Mention the VFW mission between games.
✅ Community clean-up? Wear VFW shirts and bring extra brochures.

🧠 Tip of the Week:
Create a simple "Join the VFW" flyer that highlights eligibility, contact info, and meeting times. Keep copies in your vehicles, at your workplace, and near your sign-in sheets.

📦 Need help with materials? National offers free brochures, eligibility posters, and online application cards — just ask.
