What are the most effective, achievable, and accessible ways to support infant and early childhood mental health?

May is the perfect month to bring back this past webinar recap!

Kathleen Mulrooney is the director of the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Strategy-Program at ZERO TO THREE. In the webinar, she describes how “anyone who touches the life of a young child and their family is involved in promoting infant and early childhood mental health.”

Think how many people are touchpoints for young children each day, each month...each YEAR. Let's all stay informed about how we can continue to support infant and early childhood mental health through responsive interactions!

What if the key to a stronger early childhood workforce isn't just better hiring — it's better beginnings?

New research from LENA, in partnership with Porter-Leath in Tennessee, points to a critical insight. The early months of a teacher's career are a pivotal window for retention, quality, and confidence. And most programs aren't capitalizing on it.

We're hosting a free webinar, "Help From Day One: Redesigning Support for New Teachers" on Wednesday, June 10 at 1 p.m. State leaders, program directors, and workforce experts will dig into what early educators actually need, and what the data says about keeping them.

Panelists include:
⭐Rebecca Vlasin, Colorado Department of Early Childhood (CDEC)
⭐Erin Kissling, Early Learning Indiana
⭐Larissa Fullilove, Porter-Leath (TN)
⭐Plus LENA research and moderation by Susan Butler-Staub

We'd love to see you there!

Music is a powerful “instrument” for fostering early literacy, language development, vocabulary acquisition, and reading readiness in children through rhythm, rhyme, and repetition.

And when used with intention, it's one of the most natural tools you have for sparking the kind of interactions that build brains!

We teamed up with Kindermusik to talk about how songs are more than just songs. They spark conversational turns! Give this new blog post a read to learn more about how music and conversational turns work together to support the skills children need to thrive in school and beyond! 🙌 (There's even some fun activities to try!)💜

Memorial Day asks us to stop, acknowledge loss, and remember people whose lives were cut short in service to our country.

Today, LENA pauses, with respect, for those who've died, and for the families who carry that loss forward.

Language, culture, and communication are deeply connected. And when adult-child interactions are a focus in early childhood programs, every language has a place in learning.

For example, Head Start programs support over 140 different languages! Many immersion preschools support Asian languages and Spanish. There are even community-based cultural early childhood programs.

Research on early multilingual development has found that children’s language growth isn’t determined by narrowing communication to one language. It’s shaped by whether adults stay engaged — responding, building, and sustaining back‑and‑forth interaction as languages change.

When (and why) do young children start saying "I can"? When do they know they can take that big jump safely or wash their hands by themselves? When do they finally figure out how to go down the slide on their own?

And how do they get from "I can't" to "I can"?

We've got an inkling of what plays a big part in it!
