Honor Flight Bluegrass

Honor Flight Bluegrass Our hope is to create the greatest memory of a lifetime for each Veteran. Priorities are given in the order of World War II, Korean, and Vietnam War Veterans.

Honor Flight Bluegrass, based in Louisville, Kentucky, and is recognized as a 501(C)(3), all-volunteer, non-profit organization created to honor America’s WWII, Korean, and Vietnam veterans for all their sacrifices. We fly WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War Veterans to Washington, DC and provide them with a first-class VIP tour to each of their respective memorials to honor their service and sacrif

ices. In addition, Veterans from these said wars with a diagnosed terminal illness, will be given top priority. (In reference to Vietnam Veterans, please note, that we do have a waiting list that we are diligently working on so that we can get them on a mission.) Veterans are selected on a “first-come, first-served” basis as relegated by their war service date and application date, regardless of location of duty. Veterans who have served during war time are eligible to apply with Honor Flight Bluegrass. WORLD WAR II (Three eligible categories)
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign-Medal (7 Dec. 1941 to 8 Nov. 1945)
Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal (7 Dec. 1941 to 2 Mar. 1946)
American Campaign Medal (7 Dec. 1941 to 2 Mar. 1946)
AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINES - In oceangoing service during the period of armed conflict, 7 Dec. 1941 to 15 Aug. 1945
KOREAN WAR - 27 June 1950 to 27 July 1954 (eligible for the Korean Service Medal)
VIETNAM WAR- 28 Feb. 1961 to 7 May 1975
OTHER – service during periods between WWII and the Korean War, or between the Korean War and the Vietnam War. 1948-1951 and 1955 and 1961
Priority is given to those who are terminally ill, regardless of above mentioned wars, age, and branch of service.

As we get closer to flight day … our pics and stories are rolling in! Meet Vietnam Air Force Randy Young …enlisted in January 1969. After basic training he went to Biloxi, Mississippi for electronic surveillance/ flight control training. First assignment was Pleiku, Vietnam 1969-1970. After that he was on a flight crew out of Sacramento, California. He continued flying missions from Korat, Thailand; Kwangju, Korea; Keflavik, Iceland. In 1972, he was transferred to Buckley Air National Guard in Colorado. In December 1972 I was discharged.

Looking forward to meeting and honoring the service of Vietnam Army Veteran Donald Glynn Carpenter who served from October 18, 1966 - June 27, 1969.

Mr. Carpenter was a Combat Medic & X-ray Technician in a MASH unit (Company A, Special Forces, Bien Hoa, Vietnam). In the January 1969 Tet Offensive, the North Vienamese were firing in-coming on an air base adjacent to his medical unit and struck an ammo dump causing a huge explosion. All hospital walls were moved four inches by the force of the explosion. It was too close for comfort but his medical unit escaped unharmed and all were extremely busy treating casualties from the attack.

no one knew the blessing they would be to each other in the years to follow….

I can’t Thank you enough for matching me with the man I did not know I needed in my life. I get to visit with him and his wife every few months … and I have listened to the stories, watched him play the accordion, and hugged them through health concerns. Vietnam 67-68, 3 and 1/2 years in the far east, and 3 years in Spain.

On September 29th, we get the opportunity to meet and honor the service of Vietnam Air Force Veteran James H. King Sr. ... TSgt, USAF, Retired
Retired Technical Sergeant!

He wanted to learn a dependable trade and build a better life, so he enlisted in the
United States Air Force in December 1961. He completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and went on to serve as a heavy equipment
mechanic.

Sergeant King served in the United States Air Force for more than two decades, with assignments at bases throughout the country. Among the most memorable were Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. He also served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. His daily work honed his skills and helped shape him into a responsible man.

Among his most cherished memories is serving alongside fellow
airman Isaiah Whitaker Sr. at three different bases. His service was recognized with
honors including a Presidential Unit Citation and an Outstanding Unit Award.

His duty stations can almost be traced through the places where his four children were born:, Maine; New York; Missouri; and, Texas. James and his late wife, Doris, embraced life as a military family, enjoying their years together as they traveled across the country.

After retiring from the Air Force in Alaska in 1982, James continued serving his
community through the United States Postal Service, where he worked as a letter
carrier. Away from work, he found joy in the simple, lasting pleasures of life: fishing,
hunting, and tending his garden. He was also the kind of neighbor and friend people
could count on—always willing to lend a hand when someone had car trouble and
needed help getting back on the road.

Looking back, James wants people to understand that Vietnam veterans have never received enough credit for their service and sacrifice. For him, the Honor Flight is an opportunity to connect with other retired veterans, share in their fellowship, and receive the recognition that he and his fellow service members so richly deserve.

We are looking forward to meeting and honoring the service of Vietnam Army Veteran Larry D Taylor ... who served from 1964-1968.

Mr. Taylor enlisted in the United States Army in February 1964, knowing he would likely be drafted and choosing to enlist so he could have more control over his military service. Upon being sworn in, he was selected to serve in the Army Security Agency (ASA). Although a standard voluntary enlistment was three years at the time, his selection for the ASA required a four-year commitment. Larry completed 10 weeks of basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before continuing to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, for advanced training with the Army Security Agency.

After completing his training, he received orders to Vietnam, but just two weeks before he was scheduled to leave, his orders were changed and he was instead sent to Chitose, Japan. He served there for two years before returning to the United States in December 1966. Larry spent the remainder of his four years of military service at Two Rock Ranch in Petaluma, California, and completed his service as a Sergeant, E-5. He remains proud of his time in the United States Army and his service to his country.

Meet another Vietnam Army Veteran who will be joining us September 29th ... Allen Craig Sebolt who served from 1967 to 1969. Mr. Sebolt completed basic training at Fr. Knox, KY and advanced training at Ft. Leonardwood, MO and served in Vietnam from 1967-1968 with the 264th Combat Engineers as a Bridge Specialist. He was responsible for building the longest pontoon bridge at that time and also delivering supplies in convoys all over South Vietnam.
