Followup from our recent “Come alongside!” event with Iglesia Estilo de la Cruz On April 12, over 50 volunteers joined around 30 members of this sister immigrant church to help them with some serious spring cleaning. A couple of crews painted. Another cleaned out an attic. Another dismantled and moved a metal shed. Yet another ripped up carpet in a basement that frequently floods. Then all enjoyed a delicious meal with food from multiple Latino countries and heard a word from their pastor Jose. Since that event, Iglesia Estilo de la Cruz has made further renovations, and as you can see from the pictures below, their basement looks quite different now.

“In the fall of 2025 we gathered at Eastside Christian Church for Harvest Blessing Day, an event hosted by Refuge International. Some of us came to cook and serve, while others came as guest, but none of us knew that this single day would be the start of a sisterhood. Though we come from different backgrounds and countries- Mexico, Peru and Brazil- we shared a deep desire; to belong to the family of Christ. Before that day, we were strangers in the same church, today we are a family. This connection led us to create our own women's bible group in January of 2026. meeting in a beautiful blend of Spanish and Portuguese, we gather not only to learn more about the word of God but to support and grow alongside one another.”

- Marisa (pseudonym; Mexico) from Eastside Christian Church regarding a beautiful outcome from this past fall’s Harvest Blessing Day meal

"Senior year, I knew that I wanted to spend my summer doing something that could help my resume, but I felt the Lord tugging at my heart to do something in ministry but I didn’t know what that was. One of my mentors sent me this opportunity to work with Refuge, and I knew that it was the best of both worlds. This internship gave me the nonprofit experience and built up my resume, but it was also going to be a place that would help me grow spiritually and pour into others. I didn’t really know what to expect but it has been everything I’ve dreamed of and more. Seeing groups from more rural areas being able to interact with international communities without getting on an airplane was really special. Interning with Refuge this summer helped immerse me in Louisville’s international communities. It allowed me to see the refugee experience firsthand and how God is using immigration to spread his kingdom. This internship gave me a perspective of immigration that I don’t think I would have gotten sitting in a classroom or reading a textbook. It helped me expand my understanding of how to care for immigrants. Our mission statement of seeing a Christian friend for every refugee and immigrant in Louisville is doable. It was cool to see that with Nations Next Door and that it's a goal that we’re able to accomplish and it’s been an honor to help Refuge seek that goal."
- Mallory (Summer Intern with The Nations Next Door; Fern Creek Christian Church)

"I think my favorite stories come from trying new foods and beverages with Celine. She hates coffee and had never tried matcha before, so I took her to a local cafe and she LOVED it. We practiced ordering and vocabulary associated with cafes. Then, I also took her to a Kenyan restaurant after she said she missed Sambusas- a traditional pastry filled with meat or lentils. We ordered lots of Sambusas and other African dishes that she enjoyed. She brought some home to her girls who were not used to African food (they are very little and do not remember anything from living in Africa) and they loved it so much that they cried once they had eaten it all.”

-Sydney (Christ Fellowship Church) and her English mentee, Celine (Rwanda)

“Our brief summer window with refuge international continues to shape the perception and direction of cross-cultural ministry at FBCMW. The experience our church had with Refuge International TNND has proved to be invaluable as we serve our displaced foreign neighbors that reside in our own community. By God's grace we have connected with a family from Cuba and Venezuela that are very new to life in the USA. We have connected this family to Spanish speaking members in our congregation and found ways to include this family in our regular worship gatherings and Bible study. Much of what I often think is too far a stretch for a congregation of Kentucky-born-and-raised southerners is truly possible with God.”
- Ben (Youth Minister at First Baptist Church; Mt. Washington) regarding student ministry following their summer experience with The Nations Next Door (TNND)

“Two of our families have worked together to build relationships with the workers at El Nopal in Corydon. They invited them and their families over for Christmas dinner. Using our Spanish-speaking member, the gospel and Christmas story were shared. Over 20 from the restaurant came! Their kids helped the adults translate too. It was a sweet time. And tonight, the workers invited those CBC families to eat New Year’s dinner with them at the restaurant at 10 p.m.! We might need the Spanish-speaking church planter even before the ESL starts at this rate!”
- Brothers and sisters from Corydon Baptist Church and many Spanish-speaking friends from El Nopal restaurant

"What an eye-opening opportunity Refuge International has given our church! They have taught us locally about the experiences of others globally. We are from a small rural town in East Tennessee and don't have many opportunities to interact with refugees or asylum-seekers, but The Nations Next Door program has educated us about the global landscape of refugees. We especially have been impacted by interacting with refugees families face-to-face. No longer are refugees "those people" that I might see on the news, but we have a chance to meet and interact with real people with difficult stories, many of whom show incredible hospitality. One of the unexpected blessings of this annual experience is that more and more people in our church have grown a heart for the global movement of missions, to look beyond our community to be involved in what God is doing among the nations. I'm thankful for the work of RI!"
- Todd (Pastor of Greenhouse Church; Athens, TN) regarding his church's three-time experience with The Nations Next Door student missions camp
