We are a 501c3 non profit organization formed in 2015 dedicated to education about parrots, birds, and Kentucky’s local wildlife. Also the rescue, transport, and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned wildlife from around Jefferson county, Kentucky. Working with other organizations to get as many animals help as we can. We don’t allow drama and we do our best to keep this a safe environment for all parrot, bird, and animal lovers to enjoy. We appreciated everyone here that participates and shares our content. The more eyes we can reach hopefully the more animals can also be saved. It takes a team and we are lucky enough to work with some of the best around who all want the same thing. To see Kentucky’s animals get the help they need. We try our best to keep the content fresh and entertaining. Let's talk about that face. 😬

When an opossum feels cornered, it opens wide, hisses, growls and drools. Fifty teeth, all on display. It looks like something straight out of a horror movie.

It's a bluff. Opossums are slow and they know it. They can't outrun a dog or outfight one, so they put on the scariest show they've got and hope you back off.

If you meet one in your yard: back away, bring your pets inside, and give it a way out. It will leave on its own. It wants nothing to do with you.

Know your monster. 🧟

Fact 1: It's a marsupial. The only one in North America. Same club as kangaroos and koalas, just with worse PR.

Fact 2: Fifty teeth. More than any other land mammal on this continent.

Fact 3: The hiss is a bluff. All that drooling and grinning is an act to make you back off. It would much rather just leave.

Fact 4: It plays dead, and it doesn't get a vote. When it's scared, its body shuts down and goes limp, sometimes for hours.

Scary face. Zero interest in you.

🎬 THE THING IN THE YARD

It comes out after dark. It hisses. It drools. It shows you fifty teeth. And when things get really bad, it drops dead right in front of you.

It is also the least dangerous thing in your yard.

This Halloween we're telling you a true story about an opossum mom, a dog, and ten babies the size of your thumb. Don't worry. This one has a happy ending. 🖤

Meet the flock coming to Trunk or Treat! 🦜🎃

🤍 Rosie, umbrella cockatoo. Her crest opens up like, you guessed it, an umbrella.
💙 Houdini, blue-throated macaw. His species is critically endangered in the wild.
🤍 Raylin, triton cockatoo, from the New Guinea branch of the cockatoo family.
💚 Shazam, Indian ringneck, small bird, big vocabulary.
🩷 Kiki, Moluccan cockatoo, with that famous salmon-pink crest.
🩶 Stormy, Timneh African grey, smaller and darker than his Congo grey cousins, with a maroon tail.

Epilogue: They're Still Out There.

Somewhere tonight, a duck steps off a curb. A bat lies in the grass. A baby raccoon calls for a mother who isn't coming.

And somewhere, a phone is about to light up.

That's the night shift. It never really ends, it just waits for the next call. Thank you for following April 17 with us all week.

Every rescue starts with someone choosing to care. 🖤

Five ways to survive the night. 🔦 Our whole wildlife rescue survival guide in one post:

1. 🚗 Don't become the monster. Stop for waterfowl.
2. 🧤 Never touch the creature. Gloves or a towel, bats especially.
3. 👀 Never split up. Look for siblings before you leave.
4. 🍼 Don't feed the monster. No milk, no bread, no water down the throat.
5. 📞 Know who to call. Save a rehabber's number today. At 2 AM you won't want to be searching.

Found a baby animal? The wrong food can kill it faster than an empty stomach.

🥛 No milk. Cow's milk makes babies sick.
🍞 No bread.
💧 No water down the throat. Babies inhale it.
🌙 Warm, dark, quiet. That's all it needs until help arrives.
📞 Then call us. Leave the bottles to us. We're up anyway.

Act III: The Witching Hour.

Somewhere close to midnight on April 17, the phone lit up one more time.

Four orphaned baby raccoons, and all four were hungry.

Here's how bottle feeding four babies goes: you feed one, and the next one starts screaming. Then the next. By the time you finish the fourth, the first one is hungry again.

That's how it goes until sunrise. And the good news: all four made it to morning. 🦝
