🦜 Ruffled Feathers Parrot Sanctuary Inc. 🏡💚
Providing a safe haven for parrots & wildlife in need. 🌿🐦 Dedicated to expert care, rehabilitation & second chances. We are a 501c3 non profit organization formed in 2015 dedicated to education about parrots, birds, and Kentucky’s local wildlife. Also the rescue, transport, and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned wildlife from around Jefferson county,

Kentucky. Working with other organizations to get as many animals help as we can. Thank you for visiting our page. We wanted to create a positive environment for sharing educational as well as fun animal related post. We don’t allow drama and we do our best to keep this a safe environment for all parrot, bird, and animal lovers to enjoy. We appreciated everyone here that participates and shares our content. The more eyes we can reach hopefully the more animals can also be saved. It takes a team and we are lucky enough to work with some of the best around who all want the same thing. To see Kentucky’s animals get the help they need. We try our best to keep the content fresh and entertaining. If you appreciate what we do please don’t hesitate to click on the donate button to help us out or to set up a monthly donation. Our monthly donators really make it possible to budget what we can afford to do from month to month. Facebook does not charge any fees when you donate though them and they also help by donating to our birds by the number of people who see the reels we share. So please share those we really appreciate it. We also have PayPal and snail mail available for donations. We also accept local donations of cages, animal related items, and general stuff which if we can’t use will sell to raise money for the rescue. Thank you everyone for visiting our page and we look forward to sharing many exciting adventures, educating each other, and enjoying our critter lives together. Be kind and this will be a page we can all enjoy. - Brad

I was a firefighter. And watching it unfold, I knew one thing for certain: they were going to need help.

So we pawned what we could to get gas money, packed up my old red Toyota, and drove twelve hours straight to New York City. I did not know what I was driving into. I had already made my peace that I might not come back.

I went anyway. When people need help, you help. That is just how I was raised.

How do you measure success in wildlife rescue?

Day 7, the finale of our July 22 series. It is tempting to count rescues and releases. Those numbers matter, but they never tell the whole story. The real measure is harder to count: the family that now knows what to do when they find an orphaned animal, the child who grows up believing wildlife deserves kindness, the volunteer who answers one more call after a long day, the community that slowly learns compassion extends to every living thing.

Seven days, one story. It always begins the same way. Someone notices. Someone cares. Someone acts.

Thank you for spending this week with us, and with Stormy. 🪶

Louisville residents, a friendly reminder. If you see a fledgling Great Horned Owl on the ground, do not assume it is orphaned. Its parents are almost certainly nearby, watching, and doing a much better job than you would give them credit for. Give us a call before you intervene.

My brother and I sat and watched it together that morning. Neither of us said much. There wasn't much to say.

And then the second plane hit. By the time it struck, we knew. This was no accident. Our whole country was in trouble, and nothing was going to be the same again.

I think a lot of us remember that exact moment, the moment we understood. I know I do.

Tomorrow is the day.
Every April 23 we pull the biggest moments of world history together and put them on the same stage as our sanctuary stories. This one has Shakespeare, a paralyzed mom raising babies, New Coke, a Greek cyclist pedaling an airplane, and a duckling stopping Louisville traffic.
Stay tuned.

The person holding the animal in the photo is almost never the one who saved it.

Day 6 of our July 22 series is about the quiet heroes. Behind every rescue is a chain of people who may never meet: someone notices an animal in trouble, someone makes the call, a driver offers a ride, a vet gets ready, a donor covers the food and medicine without ever knowing which life they helped. Volunteers like Kathie give the one thing that can never be replaced. Their time.

No single person can save every animal. But together, a community can save far more than any one of us ever could.

My phone rang that morning, and it was my mom, telling me to wake up and turn on the TV.

I watched the first tower burning, and I was scared. I will admit that to you. So I did the only thing I knew how to do. I got out of bed, dropped to one knee, and I prayed my heart out. For the FDNY. For the whole city of New York. For my country that I love so much. And most of all, I prayed for guidance, and asked God to point me in the right direction.

I did not know it yet. But that prayer was already being answered.

Everyone pictures the rescues. Nobody pictures the grape two parrots were willing to go to war over. 🪶

Not every important moment begins with an emergency. Most days at the sanctuary are quieter than that: bowls washed, water carried, perches scrubbed, diets measured. And the personalities never stop. Shazam finally relaxing outside after weeks of fireworks kept everyone in. Zeus abandoning her nest of dummy eggs the second someone mentioned sunshine. Ray and Chase settling a lifelong friendship over a single grape. And Stormy narrating all of it, whether anyone asked him to or not.

These are the residents who turn a row of enclosures into a community.

Every September, I tell this story. Twenty-five years later, that morning still knocks the wind out of me. Some years it has been too hard for me to even open. But most years I share it, because I promised I always would.

I'm telling it again this year, a piece a day over the next twelve days, leading up to the anniversary. Where I was, why I got in my truck and drove to New York, what I saw when I got there, and how a firefighter ended up spending the rest of his life saving parrots.

And this year there is something new. So many of you have asked how I am doing now, and what "live like it's September 12th" really means to me all these years later. When the story is told, I am finally going to answer.

It begins tomorrow.
