RICK STEVENS RETIRES FROM LOCAL 89
Benefits Coordinator Rick Stevens has retired after thirty years of working as a proud member of Local 89.
Rick first became a Teamster in 1996 ,when he started working at Jeffboat in Southern Indiana. He began serving his fellow members as a Steward in 2000. During his time at America's largest inland shipyard, Rick participated in many negotiations a member of Local 89's bargaining committee, walked several picket lines, helped lead the charge to overwhelmingly defeat a decertification vote, and was a militant activist outside his shop as well.
In 2017, Rick became the Chief Steward at Jeffboat, and was the last to hold that title as the shop tragically closed the next year. In 2018, after the Jeffboat closure, Local 89 hired Rick to replace Benefits Coordinator Gary Tomes who was nearing retirement. Since then, Rick has worked tirelessly in our Benefits Department, helping countless members navigate issues with healthcare, short term disability and retirement.
All of us on the Local 89 staff are happy to see Rick reach the goal of all trade unionists - the ability to retire with dignity. Although we will miss him, we wish him the very best in his much deserved retirement. Congratulations, Rick, now get out there and enjoy life to the fullest!
