🌟WOC & WWAR Member Spotlight: Emily Bingham🌟

American women and their histories have been central to Emily Bingham as a scholar and community leader. When WOC & WWAR formed in 2020, she saw Tawana Bain and Phoebe Wood taking the kind of grassroots action that lays the ground for long-term change. Building community across race has been discouraged through most of US history — and is crucial to the survival of our American nation. She enthusiastically signed up, though her background is less business-focused than many of our members.

From Koffee Klatches on West Jefferson St. to dinners in member homes to outings like our tour of the Speed Museum’s Helen LaFrance exhibition, WOC & WWAR has helped reshape connectivity in our city and how we see its past, present, and future.

Born in Louisville to a “liberal” white media family with slaveholding roots on both sides, Emily earned her Ph.D. in History from UNC-Chapel Hill. Before Bellarmine, she taught at Centre College, UofL, and St. Francis High School, and has served on the boards of the Filson Historical Society, UofL, and the ACLU of Kentucky.

Her books include the prizewinning biography Irrepressible: The Jazz Age Life of Henrietta Bingham and, most recently, My Old Kentucky Home: The Astonishing Life and Reckoning of an Iconic American Song which traces a brutal minstrel melody from 1853 into the heart of Kentucky’s official identity — winner of the Kentucky Historical Society’s book prize. The Washington Post called it “a powerful story of how, exactly, we fool ourselves into thinking the past is past.”

Tying it all together is Emily’s effort to see how big ideas in American history shape real, non-famous people. People connect to stories — and Emily uses biography and cultural history to follow ideas through the decisions and identities that run through each of us.

When not in the archives, she’s biking Louisville’s parks, dreaming of Italy, and spending time with her husband Stephen and their family.

✨WOC & WWAR Member Spotlight: Burun

With a degree in African and African American Studies from Mount Holyoke College, Birungi Ives has built a career dedicated to social impact, community development, and health equity. From founding the Global Echo Online Forum and interviewing leaders such as Christy Turlington Burns and Cindy Crawford, to launching ALIGNE Consulting LLC, Birungi has spent years connecting people, organizations, and resources to create meaningful change.
Today, through ALIGNE and its annual Respite + Healing event, she brings together leaders, healthcare providers, patients, and advocates to address health disparities affecting Black and Brown women and to help close the knowledge and trust gaps in healthcare.
We’re proud to feature Birungi and the incredible impact of her work. 💜
