"It's Not Over Until I Stop Trying" - Michael's Story of Resilience:
Growing up, one resident’s journey has been filled with challenges and constant change. Michael (name changed to protect privacy) shared that he has four brothers, was raised by his mother, moved frequently, attended around a dozen different schools, and experienced periods of homelessness. Along the way, he faced hospitalizations, residential placements, family separation, and struggles with his mental health. Despite these obstacles, he found motivation in the hope of reconnecting with his younger brothers and building a better future. Reflecting on his experiences, he said, “Something that always kept me going was knowing I would be able to see my little brothers again one day, knowing it’s not over until I stop trying.” That determination helped him continue moving forward even during some of the most difficult times in his life.
At Boys & Girls Haven, he has gained a new perspective on responsibility, growth, and perseverance. He explained that the program has taught him the importance of taking the first step toward adulthood, learning from others, and demonstrating personal growth through actions. Over time, he has become more aware of how to manage his emotions and recognize what helps him stay calm when he is upset. Looking ahead, he hopes to complete high school through online learning, attend college, become an entrepreneur, and start a business that can positively impact both himself and others. His story is a reminder that success comes from continuing to push forward, learn from challenges, and keep sight of the goals that matter most.
