We are in the final stretch!

Week 3 was full for Cohort 2:
→ Emotional intelligence and why that matters in the workplace
→ Personality assessment to build self-awareness and put language to how we think
→ Interview skills practice
→ Continued resume and cover letter editing
→ Shopping for interview outfits

The week ended with some shopping for interview outfits. Our Leaders are almost ready to take the next step and we’re excited!

One more week of professional development before skills training. Let’s go!

Remember Cohort 1? They’ve completed their CNA training, started taking their certification exams and are applying for jobs.

One Leader saw her dream job posted and realized it required an additional certification she didn’t have yet. So she used her weekly stipend to pay for it herself and make herself eligible.

She is a problem solver and she figured it out!

This is the part of the journey that doesn’t always make the highlight reel. It takes perseverance to keep going between training and the first paycheck. But these Leaders aren’t giving up.

Week One was full of first steps for our Leaders:
1. Start a new program
2. Begin writing their resume
3. Site visit for CNA training
4. Apply for their Skills Development track

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part! Those first steps can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re doing something you’ve never done before.

But that’s why community matters. When you’re surrounded by people taking the same steps, the hard things become possible.

Here’s to Week Two and taking more first steps towards a future these Leaders have dreamed about!

Cohort 2 has begun.

We believe there is no significant change without significant relationships, so this morning we started exactly there.

Before anything else, we invested time in building the foundation: getting to know one another, sharing stories, and starting to create the kind of community that makes everything else possible.

The journey ahead is going to be something special. We can’t wait!

Advance Louisville would (literally) not exist without Dentons. Huge thanks to Scott and his team (special shoutout to Helen Cooper and her colleagues) for working with us for several months to secure our 501c3 in 2025.

They were passionate about the project, encouraging and supportive every step of the way, and always quick to communicate and keep us informed.

Louisville has the 5th highest poverty rate in the country. Nearly 1 in 7 of our neighbors are living below the poverty line.

We believe that can change - one Leader at a time.

This is Laquata, from our first cohort, in her own words:

My name is Laquata Gaines, though I often go by Kay. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri, and currently reside in Louisville, Kentucky.

My journey has had its challenges. After losing my stepfather to cancer and facing hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, I eventually left high school during my junior year. However, I was fortunate to meet a counselor, Ms. Boss, who inspired me to believe that hard work and perseverance could lead to a better future. Since moving to Louisville, I have earned my high school diploma and entered the childcare field. As a mother to an eight-month-old son, I am more motivated than ever to succeed and lead by example.

I’m thankful for the opportunity Advance Louisville provided. After learning about the program, I knew it was the right path for me. I am now on my way to becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and I look forward to advancing my career in the medical field—a dream I’ve had for many years.

CNA training is officially complete for these leaders! What an exciting night to see them accomplish another successful milestone in their journey. They keep showing up and showing out!!

One of our leaders closed out the night with an inspirational word to everyone in the room. It could be summarized as: “Life is hard, but you and your family are worth it. Keep going, never give up!”

Thank you Healthcare Essentials Training Institute for your partnership in training and coaching these leaders into the healthcare industry. Also, thanks to for hosting this event and for your partnership in creating stories of HOPE across our city one family at a time.

These stories are not over. More goals to be accomplished. Advance Louisville graduation is coming soon!
