Compassion and love abound for our friends at Family Scholar House. Please follow them on how you can help during this difficult timešŸ™šŸ˜ž

We want to thank our community for reaching out to support Family Scholar House participant families and staff as we grieve the loss of two of our participants, who were killed at our Louisville Scholar House campus this morning.

In 18 years of providing affordable housing, we have never experienced a violent tragedy on any of our campuses. But that history does not lessen the devastation of two young women losing their lives.

Two young children have lost their mothers — mothers who were working diligently to earn the education and credentials needed for meaningful healthcare careers that would allow them to give back to their community while providing a better life for their families. One was planning a career in forensic science; the other was pursuing a nursing career specializing in geriatric care.

Single parents come to Family Scholar House because they want a better life for themselves and their families. They come with dreams and goals, and with the support of our team and our educational partners, they work hard to achieve them.

Today’s tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the lives and futures represented by every family we serve. It also reminds us why Family Scholar House is so committed to helping student parents break the cycles of poverty and homelessness, create new cycles of success, and instill the value of education in their children.

Thank you for the many caring emails and calls checking on our families and our team. We are grateful for your concern and support.

Most of all, we ask that you please keep the children of our two participants, their families, and all of our Family Scholar House families in your prayers.

Meet Heather! šŸ’›

We’re so excited to welcome Heather Vest to the ChooseWell team as our new Family Recovery Specialist!

Heather brings a heart for people, a passion for recovery, and a genuine desire to walk alongside families as they navigate some of life’s hardest seasons. Her role is all about connection, encouragement, advocacy, and helping families build the tools and support systems they need to thrive.

We’re pretty lucky to have her—and even luckier that the families we serve get to have her in their corner. šŸ’›

Welcome to ChooseWell, Heather! We’re so glad you’re here.

How honored are we to be featured in the Better Business Bureau Giving Guide!

As a 2025 grant recipient, being highlighted by the BBB is more than recognition—it’s a reminder that communities thrive when people invest in hope, families, and second chances.

At ChooseWell Communities, we walk alongside families as they build stability, strengthen connections, and create brighter futures for their children. To see this work featured in the Giving Guide is both humbling and energizing.

Thank you to the BBB, our partners, volunteers, supporters, and the incredible families who trust us to be part of their journey. This recognition belongs to all of you.

Here’s to continuing the work of building stronger families and stronger communities—together.

Part of the very first graduating class of ChooseWell Communities.

2016.

The OGs. ā¤ļø

Paving the way. Still.

Did you know we have an Alumni Council at ChooseWell?

Our alumni meet to review, challenge, add to, advocate for, and sometimes recommend removing policies and procedures. Because the people who have actually walked the road should have a voice in how we build the road for the people coming behind them.

A lot has changed in 10 years. ChooseWell has grown. Our programs have evolved. Our policies and procedures have changed right alongside the needs of the families we serve.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

Because lived-experience experts bring something to the table that no textbook, training, or boardroom conversation can replicate: they’ve been there.

They know what helped.
They know what didn’t.
They know where the system gets in the way.
And they know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of it.

Our first graduating class didn’t just graduate from ChooseWell.

They helped build it.

And ten years later, they’re still helping us make it better.

The OGs. The trailblazers. The ones who paved the way.

Still leading. Still shaping. Still ChooseWell. ā¤ļø

šŸ“š More about our new-to-us bookstore! šŸ’™

There’s something special about The Rosewater BookstorešŸ’š

It’s one of those rare places where families can come together without needing a screen, an agenda, or a reason to hurry. Kids can wander the shelves and find a story that becomes their story. Parents can rediscover an old favorite. Grandparents can introduce a child to a book they loved decades ago.

And sometimes, a bookstore becomes something even bigger than books.

It becomes a community hub — a place to bump into your neighbors, discover something new, have a conversation, feel welcome, and belong.

That’s what we’re hoping The Rosewater can continue to be. ā¤ļø

As ChooseWell takes the reins of this little neighborhood bookstore, we’re dreaming about all the ways it can become a place for families, connection, prevention, creativity, workforce development, and community — all wrapped up in the simple magic of a good book.

And because we REALLY want kids to experience that magic…

šŸ“– Come visit The Rosewater and get a coupon for a FREE kids’ book!

Yep. FREE. Because every kid should have a book that belongs to them.

Come wander. Come browse. Come bring your kids. Come find an old favorite or discover a new one.

The Rosewater Bookstore — more than a bookstore. A little corner of community. šŸ’™šŸ“š
