Juneteenth is a historic celebration commemorating the end of legalized slavery in America. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce โ€œall enslaved people in Texas were freeโ€ โ€” more than two years ๐˜ข๐˜ง๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ President Abraham Lincolnโ€™s Emancipation Proclamation had officially ended slavery in Confederate states. Because Texas โ€” the westernmost Confederate state โ€” was geographically isolated from the primary fighting of the Civil War, it was the last area to receive word that slavery had been abolished.

is a time to commemorate freedom, resilience and achievement; to celebrate Black history and heritage; and to acknowledge there is still much work to be done in pursuit of justice and liberty for all.

CIR proudly pledges to show up for the dignity and wellbeing of the LGBTQ+ community.

In signing this pledge spearheaded by the Interfaith Alliance, we โ€” as faithful Americans and as an expression of our values โ€” call on the federal and state governments to respect marriage equality, nondiscrimination protections and equal treatment under the law. We believe nobody should fear for their safety or be denied health care because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

โ€œAs long as we are on earth, the love that unites us will bring us suffering by our very contact with one another, because this love is the resetting of a body of broken bones. Even saints cannot live with saints on this earth without some anguish. There are two things which men can do about the pain of disunion with other men. They can love or they can hate.

It was a beautiful morning for our latest installment of Holy Ground. There was meaningful conversation, music, movement and fellowship at this gathering geared toward those who provide spiritual leadership in our city.

Many thanks to the Passionist Earth and Spirit Center for hosting us on their lovely campus; to speakers Joe Phelps and our very own Sally Evans; to musician Allison Cross, who led a rhythm circle; and to all who attended.

See you at the next Holy Ground!
