In a time when it can be easy to reduce people to political identities, disagreements or categories, our faith asks us to see something deeper: a human person, created and loved by God.

The Passion reminds us of the immeasurable value of every human life and calls us to recognize that dignity in one another, including people whose lives and experiences are different from our own.

As we continue reflecting on taking the Passionist charism to the voting booth, we ask:

How am I being called to recognize and protect the dignity of people whose experiences I may not fully understand?

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of War announced that the firing squad ex*****on of Nidal Hasan, the man convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, would be publicly livestreamed. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following statement sharply condemning the decision of the U.S. government:

“It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War’s decision to publicly livestream the ex*****on of Nidal Hasan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan’s actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: ‘do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public ex*****on even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.

“I pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel that we as a nation may always choose life even in the most trying times and circumstances.”

"There exists a martyrdom of those who offer their lives in a single moment, and the more hidden martyrdom of those who give their lives day after day. This is exactly what all Christians are called to do: to give our lives with love, every day

"Our age needs men and women who have the courage to do good even when it comes at a cost. Draw close to those who are alone, support those who are weary, and seek out those who have drifted away. Have the courage to forgive, to begin again, and to engage in dialogue."

"Doing good does not always receive recognition and often requires effort, but this is the daily courage of charity. Friendship with Jesus Christ gives us the strength to live this way."

As Passionists, we embrace the crucified Christ in the crucified of our world, including our crucified Earth. In this time of discernment, we invite you to take to heart the important issues of our time in light of the Gospel and the solidarity and courage that come from the Passionist charism.

Just as St. Paul of the Cross saw the name of Jesus written on the foreheads of the poor of his time, so too are we called to see the face of Christ in our sisters and brothers and Earth herself. We want to be painfully aware of their sufferings and to actively accompany them to a place of justice, dignity, well-being, belonging, and peace.

We invite you to join us in prayer over the next weeks. Watch for our posts inspired by the documents that shape our lives as the Passionist Family.

​In the spirit of St. Paul of the Cross, grounded in our Passionist values, let us pray deeply that we may carefully discern our election choices, working together to bring God’s reign of justice, peace, and love to our world.

Our solar installation is turned on! We were blessed to have our Superior General from Rome flip the switch! This large project will supply most of our electricity for the next 20 - 25 years, so it is an important financial and ecological investment.
