Candace's Cause

Candace's Cause Candace's Cause is a Foundation that was started to honor the memory of Candace Metten by increasing awareness of DIPG and finding ways to treat it.

On March 10, 2011, Candace Metten lost her battle with DIPG. She was six years old. DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) is a type of brain tumor found in the pons area of the brainstem. It primarily affects children between the ages of 5 to 10 years of age. It is aggressive and in most all cases, fatal. DIPG makes up 10%-15% of all brain tumors, with about 100-150 new diagnoses per year in the

United States. The number is small, unless you are one of the numbers. Candace’s Cause is a foundation designed to honor Candace’s life and her struggle to live it. In her memory and with her same determination, we continue her fight. Fewer than 10% of children with DIPG survive two years from diagnosis. We want to change that, by raising public awareness and by raising money to, not only fund research, but to actually push it forward so treatment and ultimately a cure, will be found, and soon. We hope that you will share our passion in finding a cure for this cruel disease that cuts short the lives of our most innocent. We are investing in a cure, a difference, the future. We hope that you will, too.

We're having a party! But we can't have a party without YOU! On July 9th, we will be celebrating what would have been Candace's 22nd birthday. She ❤️ Mark's!! and for 9 years, Mark's has generously opened their doors and their hearts to honor Candace and support the mission by donating a portion of their sales (when you present our voucher) to the Cause!

Though Candace's time here with us was short, she . . . we all deserve to celebrate everything she still means to all of us!

We'll be posting the voucher several times in the next couple of weeks so be sure to check back for it, if you don't have it already! Hope to see you there!!

MARK your calendars! It's that time of year again. We're celebrating Candace's birthday - what would have been her 22nd birthday!!!

Join us at our annual event at Mark's Feed Store in Valley Station for a delicious meal that helps support an important cause. Mark's always graciously hosts this event and generously donates a portion of their sales to Candace's Cause and our mission to fund research for children fighting DIPG.

Great food, great company, and a great way to make a difference.

Brain Cancer Awareness Month is coming to an end. I hope our posts have been informative and perhaps they will encourage you to become active in our campaign against DIPG. The conversation cannot stop at the end of the month. It truly is an "all hands on deck" campaign, all the time.

About the conversation: You may hear both DIPG and DMG mentioned in the pediatric brain cancer community, and it can definitely get confusing. Sometimes it still confuses me. The simplest way to explain it is this:

DIPG is a specific type of tumor found in the pons area of the brainstem.

DMG is the broader name now used for a group of similar tumors found in the brain’s midline areas — including DIPG.

While the terminology may change and evolve, the reality remains the same - THERE IS NO CURE. More awareness leads to more understanding, more research, and more opportunities for better treatments - and some day, a cure.

That’s why we keep talking.
That’s why we keep advocating.
That's why we keep fundraising.
That’s why we Always Have Hope.

💛🩶 Thank you for your support. 🩷💛

There is still so much we don't know about brain cancer. We will keep pushing forward—because awareness leads to research, and research leads to cures. **Always Have Hope **

DIPG affects hundreds of children each year, and families here in Kentucky are feeling the impact. Somehow, here in Kentucky, it's not feeling quite so "rare".

Join us May 16 for Candace’s Cause 5K (registration link above) and May 17 for DIPG Awareness Day as we raise awareness, fund research, and bring hope of a brighter tomorrow to our DIPG community. 💛
