United to serve as an everlasting force for cancer awareness and to keep the light of hope shining for us all, that we may one day live in a world free from cancer.http://twitter.com/EternalBeacon I made a donation and spread the word to some friends who didn’t hesitate to help the cause. A few days later I followed up with the person who had coordinated the event and asked how much they had raise
d. It was apparent to me the contributions made by my four friends and myself accounted for about 90% of the total raised over this week-long event. One friend in particular said to me “You could do better than that, you should organize an event.”
Being fairly new to the Second Life community and having never attempted to implore complete strangers playing a game to turn their attention to charity I decided to seek out those with experience. I had learned somehow, somewhere, that the American Cancer Society had established a presence within the game, with real-life full-time employees serving as in-world liaisons. They had, by this time, successfully organized Relay For Life for three years and as it happened there was an informational meeting coming up for the 2008 season. And that is where it started…
I could never have foreseen the impact it would have on me. What was intended to be a single event has turned into a passion I can never turn my back on. It’s not an easy undertaking at times, but it’s become a part of me. I’ve learned many lessons along the way, one of the most important being that there is nothing more powerful than the human spirit and when we are united to a single purpose we CAN move mountains.
