This past Friday, our KALA class explored the impact of international agricultural trade on Kentucky's economy. Participants heard from Jonathan Van B***n, Import/Export Advisor with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Heidi Phelps with CBG Grain, and Dennis Stephens, VP of Operations with Monty's Plant Food, who shared their expertise and perspectives on global markets and trade opportunities for Kentucky agriculture.

Thank you to everyone who attended our June Luncheon! We also had the pleasure of hearing from Tim Hughes, who shared stories and insights from his travels around the world, highlighting the diverse cultures and agricultural practices he has encountered throughout his journey.

A special thank you to the Kentucky Corn Growers for sponsoring this month's meeting!

Congratulations, Ms. Kidwell, the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts - KACD Teacher of the Year!

The District is so proud to announce Mrs. Jenny Kidwell, STEM teacher at Taylorsville Elementary School, has been chosen as 2026 Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts - KACD Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Kidwell will be honored at the KACD Convention on July 28, 2026 at the Crowne Plaza in Louisville, Kentucky.
A key partnership was with the Spencer County Conservation District, which awarded a grant to support soil-based learning in the classroom. Through this grant, several specialized kits were obtained that significantly enhanced students’ understanding of soil science and conservation. One of these was a classroom composting kit, which allowed students to build and maintain their own composter using potting soil and selected organic materials. Students observed decomposition up close through magnified viewing windows and participated in different activities that explored topics such as which materials decompose most effectively, the role of organisms in decomposition, the difference between dirt and soil, and the characteristics of healthy soil. This hands-on experience helped students directly connect abstract concepts to real-world environmental processes.
Another resource provided through this partnership was the Dirt Lab Kit, which immersed students in the physical properties and composition of soil. Through collaborative, inquiry-based activities, students used their senses to explore soil and engaged in creative simulations such as building like a beaver, tunneling like an ant, or burrowing like a crayfish. These activities helped students understand how living organisms interact with soil and how humans have learned from nature to design and build. The kit supported cross-curricular learning, encouraging students to experiment, engineer, and problem-solve while deepening their understanding of natural systems.
The Topsoil Tour kit further extended student learning by introducing more advanced soil testing and conservation practices. After completing a soil conservation unit, students conducted their own scientific investigations, testing soil samples for texture, pH, and essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium using testing tablets. This experience allowed students to take on the role of scientists, analyzing soil health and understanding its importance for plant growth and environmental sustainability.

Congratulations to our 2026-2027 scholarship winners: Seth Monroe (Spencer Co), Kendall Slaughter (Spencer Co) and Case Sherrill (Oldham Co). All three will be attending the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment this fall. Case couldn’t join us on Friday because he was finishing his term as Kentucky 4-H state president. We wish these young agriculturalists all the best as they begin their next chapter of education.

Congratulations to Dr. James “Greg” Kuhns of Bullitt County for being named a Kentucky Leopold Conservation Award finalist. Dr. Kuhn’s Crooked Creek Farm has prioritized agronomy, timber, land, and water management practices. Milkweed patches have been preserved and expanded to serve as breeding sites for endangered Monarch butterflies. Riparian buffers have been established to reduce erosion and protect water quality. Forest pools were built for wildlife. Fescue fields were converted to native grasses to provide wildlife habitat and support haying for his herd of beef cattle. Join us on June 5 for our next networking meeting at the Kentucky Farm Bureau headquarters in Louisville. In addition to presenting scholarships to three new students for the 2026-2027 school year, we will hear Tim Hughes, a consummate world traveler, speak about global agriculture.

Mr. Tim Hughes of Frankfort, KY, joined the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) as a Project Director in April 2024. He also serves as the Midwest Region Biomass Lead for the Idaho National Laboratory.

Tim served as the Senior Trade Advisor for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) from 2019 through 2023. He moved to this position after serving three years as KDA's Deputy Executive Director for the Office of Marketing and, immediately before that, the Director of Biofuels for the Kentucky Energy & Environment Cabinet. Prior to these roles, he served as the Senior Policy Analyst of the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy, where he also held various other roles in agricultural development since 2004.

If you enjoyed Quint Pottinger’s presentation in March, check out this June 20 event in Bardstown.

There’s something special about a summer night in Bardstown✨.

The music echoing through downtown streets. The sound of glasses 🥃clinking between old brick buildings. Neighbors becoming friends over a shared pour. Stories passed across tables the same way they have been in Kentucky for generations.

During National Bourbon Week, we wanted to create something that felt deeply rooted in all of that.

Introducing Rooted in the Rye🌾 — an immersive dinner and bourbon experience hosted at Bespoke in Bond in partnership with Preservation Distillery and 8th generation Kentucky farmer, Quint Pottinger of Affinity Farms.

Before the street festival and concert fill downtown, guests will gather inside Bespoke in Bond beginning at 4:30PM for an evening centered around the people behind the bourbon. Quint will share the history of Kentucky grain farming, modern innovations shaping the future of whiskey, and the incredible journey from field to glass. Guests will experience Preservation tastings, enjoy a featured pour of Quint’s first Kentucky Rye release, a full buffet dinner, live music, and bar service along the way.

But what makes this night truly special is what happens after dinner.

As downtown Bardstown comes alive for the National Bourbon Week concert and street festival, your event wristband gives you exclusive access back inside Bespoke in Bond all evening long — including private bathrooms and a private bar just steps away from the crowd.

No long lines. No losing your place. Just a home base in the heart of bourbon country while the city celebrates around you.

This is more than a dinner.
It’s Kentucky hospitality.
It’s bourbon history.
It’s community.
It’s Bardstown.

Tickets are $160 and include:
• Buffet Dinner
• 2 Drink Tickets
• Preservation Distillery Tastings
• Quint Pottinger’s First Kentucky Rye Pour
• Live Music
• Private Festival Access at Bespoke in Bond

Join us June 20th and experience National Bourbon Week the way only Bardstown can offer it.
